And what kind of establishments are you eating at where this is some big issue for you? How often does it happen?
It's been at least 5 years since I've had a bad waitstaff experience.
I rarely have ever gotten service from a waiter that I actually thought was noticeably bad or pissed me off. Maybe two or three times that really stick out to me in the last 10 years.
It makes me wonder if people who say that are looking for ridiculous things to catch their waitstaff on as an excuse to tip less because they are cheap bastards.

My single biggest factor for service is how long I have to wait for a drink refill. I understand the server can't always affect how long the food takes, but they certainly can get my glass refilled in a reasonable time.

Because you're a piece of shite

Black people don't tip. You should be lucky you don't have to pay them to eat. O wait we do. And trashy white people for that matter

That's just shitty teamwork. Everyone is responsible for refills, especially shite like tea and water. No one should have a half full drink unless you just suck it down.

With comments like this, I'm guessing you are pretty high up on the white trash scale in most peoples opinions.

I mean, I HAVE paid for someone to eat before. I rounded up to the next dollar when giving out change, and sometimes even that wouldn't be left. So, while not a lot, I've paid someone .99-.01 for me to wait on them.

I usually start my tip at 20%. I have tipped up to 40% at a dinner for exceptional waitresses, and have tipped 0 on a few occasions. Those are also the times I am more likely to grab the manager and say something (both the 40 and 0% times).
quote:I know this is generally true because I have dated a few waitresses, but I wonder how they tip black waitstaff? I'd be curious to hear if it was just that they are horrible tippers all around, or if it is a racism thing
Unfortunately, the general stereotype that blacks tipped poorly was true. Not always, mind you, especially with upper-class or older couples...but if some young, 'urban' looking folks sat down, 10% was gravy

I tip 15-20% based on the service. I do the same for togo orders bought to the car.

From what the black servers that I know have told me, it's not a racist thing. They just don't tip anyone.

I usually go 20%, and I round up to the next dollar instead of leaving tip as the exact percentage with change.

~15-20% on average for the night.
The reason why bartending is a better gig is because of the volume especially if it's a decent size bar.
As a bartender you get a LOT more customers on average than a server at a bar. So if you don't get tipped on one tab, usually someone else leaves a little more than average and it balances out.
Serves typically have few tabs but larger. So if they serve 8 people on one or two tabs, and that tab stiffs them for a few hours, it totally ruins their average.

There is definitely some truth to this. It also might be that the higher percentage of customers tend to be white (just due to the percentage of white vs blacks.) and people just tend to notice the anecdotal evidence.
It is a pleasant surprise when tipped well (15-20%) by an African-American though.

Haha, that would be funny hearing black servers argue over who is getting the black tables. I guess the irony is comical

I've heard them complain after a black table was seated in their section. When I asked what was the problem, he said they're shitty tippers

Bartenders usually make more per hour than waitstaff. Plus tip outs for drinks made.

I went to Chimes East once and evidently got sat in the black section. I'd say that 95% of the people in the section were black, except me and my date
No black people in any other areas

From what I hear, Asians are consistently awesome tippers.
