How will social media change the perception of the younger generations elders? I'm in my early 40s so when I saw old photos of my grandparents ,when they were younger, they were usually some type of wedding or school photo. There wasn't much personality to the photos so I just assumed that my grandparents were always mature and reserved like they had always been since I had known them.

Fast forward to today and social media. People putting crazy photos on facebook and the Chive for instance. It would have been pretty shocking to see "hump day" or "burn your bra" pics of my grandmother on the chive. How can you tell your kids not to do certain things when they have documented proof that you once did these things?

Thoughts?

I think it is currently showing how ignorant and out of touch our older generations are because they now have a platform to share their every thought without doing any actual research.

For the record I love the Chive and don't have kids. It really doesn't matter to me if people want to post pictures of themselves or do porn. I was just interested in people's thoughts on the subject.

100% agreed. I've definitely noticed this.

I always see my aunts/uncles/parents' friends post things on facebook and I'm always like "wow, I had no idea you were such a clueless idiot"

I've thought about stuff like this recently. Grandparents and grandchildren will probably in general be much more connected personally since eventually almost all elderly people will have smart phones, a Facebook profile, etc. I guess that could in turn turn younger generation off to Facebook but it will be interesting to see how social dynamics shift.

Basically I think the societal gap between old and young will diminish. Not entirely, but it will be significant IMO.

Until recent history, like many things in our lives, we have become much less formal than our forebears. The denizens of the 1960s and 1970s, wrongly or rightly, shattered "authority" or what they saw as arbitrary imposition of rules and such, including etiquette/courtesy.

In my grandparents' generations (all of mine born about 110 years ago) it was considered impolite to smile or show one's teeth. So the photos make them seem dour and lifeless, but that's not likely the case, they have too many funny stories. If you look at candid snaps from ball games and such, you see smiles. But for official portraits or whatever, it was considered rude.

It was also, likely, a way to look better, as who knows the condition of their smiles.

Funny you are referencing youth.

First thing I thought when I saw your title is how I thought most old people were so smart and then I saw their lack of grammar skills, inability to form a sentence, and mindless reposting of utter crap from satire websites. I realized that even CEOs of major companies can be massive dumbasses.
