Big Bang? What Big Bang? In a new theory, researchers suggest that the start of the universe may have involved no bang at all.
“Our theory suggests that the age of the universe could be infinite,” study co-author Saurya Das, a theoretical physicist at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada, told LiveScience.

Robert Brandenberger, a theoretical cosmologist at McGill University in Montreal, says that even though there are holes in Einstein’s theory, scientists continue to work as if the equations still hold.
“So when we say that the universe begins with a big bang, we really have no right to say that,” Brandenberger told LiveScience.

I seem to recall a thread on this when the journal article was first published, not this CBS version.

That's not a theory, that's not having the answer to a question.

Exactly.. Why can't scientist just say
"At this time.....We have no fricking clue......."

Sorry, I must have missed it. Still, this is pretty heavy stuff if scientists actually discover there was no big bang. This theory has been a cornerstone of all scientific thinking for decades. If the Big Bang is disproved, it will turn a lot of what we thought we knew about the universe and turn it on it's head.

I find it cool that Darth Vader and Spaceman Spiff are the first two posters in this universe thread.

While history is my first love, astronomy is a close second.

it's pretty awesome to come up with theories that can't be proven or disproven

I thought there was a thread about it before too. Searched and didn't find anything though so you're forgiven.

Came here to say the Universe started in Germany but

How would disproving something that hasn't been proved affect anything?

This is absolutely ridiculous. No proof just speculation.

"2+2=/=4 and I am going to test this to see if I can prove it" is basically what they are saying

Probably was, but i'm sure it quickly morphed into a religious debate and got the axe..

There is not a single thing that we know of (not on earth, no planets, no stars, no galaxies) themselves that do not have beginnings, so it is not empirical to think that the entire thing was always just here. Humans have been observing shite for a long time- animals, planets, stars, bacteria, people- and we have found NOTHING that did not have a beginning.

Theories can be disproven, they just can't be proven.

But that's the thing, it's possible they may be in the process of discovering there was not beginning to the universe. I can't even get my mind around what that could mean.
