I just moved primary residence (only home) from one county in GA to another. I will admit that I am ignorant when in comes to the Homestead exemption. Is this something I need to file for, or does this happen at the closing for the new home?

You should be able to go to that county's website to get that info but I'm pretty sure you have to actually file for it.

You have to file for it. I think it may say on the deed that it is your homestead. Take your deed to the courthouse and they will do it for you. Some counties you can do it online but I know I (Jefferson County, AL) had to do it in person.
