Lol...I would bet I'm much more qualified than Dennis, but then again I wouldn't give a FIVE YEAR OLD pitching lessons

Dennis has specialized in helping young players learn the fundamentals early in their career. He is currently giving lessons to about 1/3 of the kids in my boy's first grade class. I understand if that's not your specialty, but he is very good at what he does.

My son has been going to Will Forbes for the last 3 years. He has learned so much from him. He will video your son and break it down frame by frame what he is doing right and what he needs to improve. Will pitched at LSU in the 80's and was drafted by MLB. He charges around $60/hr. I know you said BR but if you are willing to drive to Denham Springs, it would be worth it IMO. Good luck.

Dennis has stressed that it is okay to throw breaking pitches before they turn 8 or 9 because their ligaments are so forgiving. It is also the best time for them to learn how to correctly throw the pitch to avoid injuries in the future. Once they his 8 or 9, it's best to shut down any hard breaking pitches until high school.

He strengthens their arms using tennis balls weighted with pennies.

I have a 12yr old just finishing up basketball, so we are about to start baseball. This year he will do some pitching and I would like to get him a handful of lessons to get a basic foundation to work off of. Does anyone have any recommendations in Baton Rouge? What should I expect to pay?

Having your son take some basic lessons seems like a good idea provided you go to each lesson, and pay close attention to what the instructor is teaching him. You need to be able to help him practice because lessons aren't going to magically turn him into a Nolan Ryan

He will have to work on his mechanics and develop a good, consistent delivery and with you there on a regular basis, with you watching him at home or at practice; he has a better chance of developing good mechanics.

At 12 I wouldn't think the boy would need a ton of lessons, just the basics to insure he grips the ball correctly, toes the rubber correctly, has a good fluid motion and has a good set up and delivery, etc.

All he needs now is a straight fastball, Master that and then at a two seem fastball and then a change up.

In all seriousness, I don't see any need for him to get pitching lessons at this age. Unless he has an awkward throwing motion work on arm strength exercises and don't let him throw too much. Stick to a fastball and change up. In a few years when he starts high school will be when you want to look into lessons if you are not satisfied with the coaching he will get with his high school team.

It's not a bad idea to hire a pitching coach for an hour or so maybe for 2 or 3 Saturdays and bring 4 or 5 teammates and have the coach give them all lessons on the basics. I did it with my team and it helped when they were 10 or so.

But I listened to every word the coach said and reinforced the basic information they got and tried my best to teach the kids to work hard, work smart and just throw strikes. When they hit 12 you can work on hitting the corners, but you are right, fastballs and last a changeup.

I don't know what to tell you man. My boy greased up and rocked that puny slider out left center with 2 on. I think your boy might've pissed himself when he saw the power of my boys swing.

Eta: Dennis was in the stands. He said he was retiring after my boys at bat
