So what are they going to do with all that left over green tip? -----> military "surplus" ammo

We are going to shoot it. 3 classes of M855: what we go to war with, what we shoot to qualify and train with, and lesser training ammo.

Lot of steel ranges wont let you shoot it at their targets.

We dont use it on our personal steel either

Then we'll shoot M855A1. LC is already producing more of it than M855 anyway.

Not an issue on Army ranges. Just can't use burst or auto on 300m and Alt-C ranges.

Well, just don't let range control catch you...

I've noticed ranges that dont allow green tip fail to mention M80 7.62 NATO. That is steel jacketed and at least as damaging as M855 to mild steel targets.

Get Ready For AR-15 Ammo Ban!

It's shitty thread titles like this that send ignorant people to the store to clean the shelves of every .223/5.56 round available, considerably reducing the supply thus increasing the demand and price. It's great to discuss and stand our ground and the bullshite policies of left-wing nutjob government, but being careless with words is more a detriment to the availablity of ammo rather than a bill that will never pass.

I'll say this with respect to "sporting cartridges"

Put the a-holes pushing for this out on a farm and have them shoot a full grown wild boar hog head on between the eyes with regular ball type 223/556.
When he jumps up and chases their arses down to slice em' they will understand why green-tip has it's place in hog hunting.

You're proving my point. The civilian market will be flooded with the leftovers and if they banned it, the price in 5.56 would change considerably across the board.

There are no "leftovers". We are going to use whatever billions of rounds of M855 we have for training no matter how much M855A1 is produced. This stuff doesn't get dumped on the civilian market. It sits in magazines and warehouses for years.

Then how does military surplus ammo work? If M855 is banned and not available in stores for civilian purchase, I don't see how that wouldn't drive up the cost of everything.

You know the point I'm trying to make. I know you know more than 250% of people on this Earth but you know what I'm saying.

What you buy as M855 is contract overrun material or lots that were rejected based on cosmetic defects. They don't come from the military, those rounds never entered our supply system.

As far as I'm aware and based on the regulations I've read, there is no system by which the DoD can deliver surplus rifle or pistol ammo to the civilian market. Whatever was deemed unfit for our use would certainly be too much of a liability to sell to you. Such material would have to be demil'd and eventually sold as scrap or reprocessed into new ammunition that the government could accept.
