Nice to get email. Or notifications. Or if you out and need directions somewhere. Or a phone number. Or a menu from the closest restaurant. Or 10000s of other things a handheld computer does.

But to each his own.

I have a feeling you just didn't get one years ago and started saying how you "don't want one" and now years down the road you are sticking to it just being hard headed and really no other good reason else.

Your point is made when you said you don't have time at work. Now you're just going for style points.

I gave 5 reasons

You are right about a phone number, I usually look up addresses at home and punch EM into my gps
I realize a lot of people need a smartphone for their job but I dont
I have a work email that my district manager sends me stuff all the time

99% of my emails are spam so those can certainly wait till 9 PM

Honestly, because in the grand scheme of things, people who need later banking hours are inisgnificant to the bank. Anything of any significance financially to the bank can be done during business hours. Sucks for me too, because I do a lot of hours similar to yours,

First off I do agree with you that it would make sense for some banks to stay open later. From a business perspective it has pros and cons.

quote:

1. Price
2. They are too big
3. I don't like the idea of apple making a new phone and the consumers rushing out to buy it. I like to make my own decisions about my money, not apple
4. I see people all the time obsessed with their phone. I see a couple on a date at a restaurant, both are playing with phone. Basically each person is on a date with a phone. I don't want to be that guy
EDITED
5. Every smartphone I've seen has some huge arse crack in the screen. I can drop my cheap phone 100 times without a scratch

Disagree with this. I have a Samsung Galaxy S2, costs around a 100 bucks, was considered outdated when I bought it over 3 years ago. Dropped it a shite ton of times, no case, yet only one crack, a good size one, but largely unnoticeable. Perfect size where it's plenty big, but not like some of the monster phones coming out these days.

And by the way, you don't have to spend all day on your phone like some people do. Use it as frequently or infrequently as you choose.

Some people just don't feel the need to check Facebook or Twitter all day? If it wasn't for having an excellent camera handy at all times with my young child, I wouldn't have one either. No real need for it otherwise... Kind of a waste to have like 5-10 apps total on a a galaxy s4 that you never use.

Back in the day, banks would have to close fairly early to balance their books. It took a long time-big banks would work all night and finish shortly before they opened the next morning. Computer processing sped that up, but they still had to close early enough for the couriers make their connection-all those canceled checks from other banks had to be shipped through the Federal Reserve system back to the banks they were drawn on.

I knew that but haven't thought about that in years. Shows my age. I remember my father on Thursday saying he had to go see his friendly banker. So he could use his revolving credit line to make that 300 person Friday payroll. No wonder he enjoyed a cocktail on Thursday evenings.

This is the true answer. The cost to stay open is not worth the revenue it would capture staying open longer. Now with mobile deposit on the phone, remote deposit for desktops and ATM's functioning as tellers, banks have no reason to stay open later.

The OP wants the security of handing money to a teller, but the truth is that human being tellers have no future in the banking industry and will eventually be phased out completely.

If there is a bank within a store like "Kroger" they stay open in Kentucky until 7pm M-S.

A lot of banks are open past 5. Their branches may close.

quote:

Every other business has extended hours for busy people who work during the day

Like Doctor's and Dentists offices?

quote:

few branches open to 8 or 9 they would have tons of business.

Because the way of the future is people wanting to spend their time in a bank like a bank is a walmart or something. Less and less people are walking into a bank than ever and you want bank branches to open longer? ATMs are 24 hours a day. Applications are developed to allow you to bank online or do most bank txns yourself. And you want branches that need security and staff to stay open late at night long after the Federal Reserve has closed its books?

The second poster was right. Banks close when they close to balance and make sure all items are posted to accounts

You must not have been around when the bank closed everyday at 2 and were not opened on Saturday.

Every check that an FDIC insured bank receives is scanned through a imaging system. It is them submitted to the Federal Reserve. Ever wonder why most banks follow the federal holidays? Its because the Fed is closed. The Fedwire is closed at 6:30 Eastern for online transfers for all banks. Some cutoff times are earlier depending on the type of transactions.

Most banks are fully operational on Saturdays for 4 or 5 hours. You can also go to the bank during your lunch hour.

Banks are more accessible now than they've ever been to be honest. A previous poster made a good point regarding the profitability of staying open later as well. If there was a chance to profit from longer hours, then banks would certainly do so.

I've deposited all my checks and cash into ATM's for years now, I've never had an issue.
You just like getting a sucker from the teller. Admit it.

I deposit any checks now with chase app on my phone. Very rarely do I ever need to go to a physical bank branch.
