LOL
The do travel to all the larger cities in America and work out in the local gyms at all of them. I'd consider him an expert.......or maybe, better yet, take your opinion

I can't speak to Stony Creek's ownership, but for the longest time, decades & decades, Red's was one of the top privately owned gyms in the country. What I always liked about Red's is that he would travel out to Calif. several times a year to see what the newest thing was...Calif being several yrs ahead in almost everything...and bring it back to La. I'd be safe in saying his gym was the first in La. to have an Army style obstacle course run by ex G.I.drill instructors. And those photos are definitely old, as his gym is nothing but high class & top of the art in its equipment & over all facilities. And he's one of the nicest guys around.

I worked for a gym repair and installation business for a few years and visited most of the gyms in south la stretching to the MS gulf coast. Reds is on another level IMO. Great equipment, great amenities, etc.

Some of my best memories were made at Red's in the dressing room showers

There is more equipment there then pictured. I can't imagine you would be able to find a person that spent substantial time at both gyms that did not say SC is the top. Not saying Red's is bad or anything, its a top notch place.
Like others have stated though with how impressive some gyms are in Cali, there is no way any gym in Louisiana is one of the tops in the country.

Lafayette people's near cultish views towards Red's made me uncomfortable when I lived there.

Nicholls Rec is pretty sweet.
I'm anxious to see Thibodaux Regional's wellness center after it is done.

Just going off the picture:
No monolift
No power racks (just 3 generic squat racks)
No plate loaded machines
That looks very much like the upstairs gym at Red's (not the main one). For tennis players, soccer moms etc. It looks very nice and clean. All depends on what you are looking for in a gym.

Yes.

There's some truth to the cultishness. There's also some truth behind it.
Red is a unique character. His staff (including his son) have been there forever. He started in an abandoned Pizza Hut and built everything that is there. He hung in there through boom and bust. He arrives at three every morning, often on his bicycle. He works out, goes to mass, then usually flies his plane for a while. Did I mention he's pushing eighty?
Roided out douchebags? Some. Traces of decor from each of the last five decades? Yeah. But it's a seriously impressive place for a town the size of Lafayette.
I've got a lot coming up in Covington and am going to drop in on SC. Looking forward to that.

It's Saturday at noon. Just walked in. Red greeted me personally, same way he's been doing for his patrons since 1965. Yeah. I'm cultish.
