A dead one.

This. Mostly.

Experience a few yrs ago at Lakeside Toyota. Saw a vehicle online. Called them and said specifically "Do you still have this vehicle". They say "yes". I said, "I'm on the northshore headed your way with my entire family in the car and will buy today. Do not waste my time". I asked again if they were sure they had the vehicle and they repeat "yes indeed. See you soon"

Thirty mins later I get there and no vehicle. I catch a newbie sales guy and rip him a new one. He says they sold that car weeks ago and intentionally put cars on the website they dont have to get traffic to the lot. I try to leave and sales mgr chases me down asking why we cant make a deal. I just left fuming.

Now I will say my recent experience at a Land Mass dealership was my best experience by far. Dude was fair. Straight up take it or leave it attitude and never lied. I bought that day.

I like the kind that don't reek of desperation. I know you did not succeed in your first, second or even third career and you had to settle and sell cars, but act like you don't rely on me buying a car to feed your kids. A little confident but calm attitude will go a long way. Also, know your product. If you can't tell me the answer to even basic questions about every car on the lot, I don't want to deal with you.

We buy reliable vehicles - used from online ads. we still expect some negotiating room to feel like we got a deal. we expect that it's still there if we call in advance and say we are coming to see it. we like a little time to go home and discuss. we really like low pressure and solutions for trade ins. the people at acura on airline in baton rouge delivered.

I haven't met one I liked yet. They're aggravating and in my way. I know everything I need to know about the car before I call, including how much I'll pay for it. It's a yes or no conversation and they can't wrap their heads around that. Send me straight to the guy who's working the books.

I like the overly aggressive ones. They miscalculate and misjudge customers and act personally offended when hearing the word "no".

I combat this variety by responding to their initial "what's it going to take to get you in this vehicle today" with numbers lower than I am willing to pay. Then I continually tell them no and leave enough times so they see me as a challenge. Usually doesn't take long to get what I want. I even had a salesman in New Orleans buy me a 25 inch tv

Even as it is I have bought two cars that I had never seen or driven before. And they were even used. I paid a mechanic to go inspect them where they were located before purchasing. One, a minivan, was then driven to my house by the out of state dealership. The other, my truck, I picked up by flying to Houston then driving it home.

As for option and features - I research all that ahead of time. I know what I want before I start the purchase process down to the color and option package. And I can read owner's manuals later.

Again, salesmen aren't necessary. They are just there to make you feel better about the mark up and commission you're paying.

I like the car salesmen at the Tesla dealership. They treat everyone who walks in their like a king.

With that being said, all other car salesmen can gft.

Thank everyone for the feedback, it has been useful in most ways.

I know that I can not accomplish every person's expectation, since its different strokes for different folks. But my strategy I guess that is what you call it, is to be an information giver and mainly a good listener. I do want to be the guy that does know about the product (I consider myself very high in product knowledge and enjoy answer questions or finding out new answers), I do want to ask for the sale (not my being aggressive, but by making sure the customer knows I want them to purchase from me and not leave and purchase from the guy down the street), and I do want to cooperate with the customer (they do have the purchasing power in the end). With all that being said, I like to be honest and I try to just fit the car to the person (if they know exactly what car they want, that is the only vehicle I show them or talk to them about/if they are looking for that vehicle, I try to narrow down to the vehicle that best fits them). I believe that is what a good salesman should be and it works for MOST people, but if anyone has more advice or like to chime in, please feel free, I enjoy these comments
