In August 1942 Marvin left school to enlist in the United States Marine Corps, serving with the 4th Marine Division in the Pacific Theater.[7] He was wounded in action during the World War II Battle of Saipan, in the assault on Mount Tapochau, during which most of his unit ("I" Company, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division) were killed.[8] His injury was from machine gun fire, which severed his sciatic nerve.[9] Marvin was awarded the Purple Heart and was given a medical discharge with the rank of Private First Class in 1945 at Philadelphia.[10] Marvin's awards were the Purple Heart, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

A hero and one hell of an actor. Seems like he would have been a blast to hang out with and have a few drinks.

My earliest memory of Marvin probably was from...

Cat Ballou

Sure, it has Jane Fonda (smoking hot) but even with the commie, this was one of my favorite movies as a youngster.

Mmmmmmmm

Marvin played a great drunk. That was one of my earliest avatars.

Hell in the Pacific
Probably the first movie I saw with a 100% "Frack You" ending. Enemy Mine without the happy ending. I really need to revisit this one. Probably haven't seen it since I was 13 or even younger.

Donovan's Reef
Loved this movie. Marvin and The Duke! Probably not a great movie, but I had fun, especially the fight.

The Big Red One
I definitely need to rewatch this one. Haven't seen it since it was on tv and I was probably watching it for Mark Hamil to see him in something other than Star Wars and Corvette Summer.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
What a great movie and cast. Marvin could play a great bad guy. Should have done it more often.

The Dirty Dozen
Even better cast.

His older years sure were cold with

Gorky Park

and

Death Hunt
Death Hunt was plastered all over HBO right around the time we first got cable.

Those are the movies I remember the most. If I missed some good ones let me know.

I've had the honor of visiting his grave at Arlington Cemetary. One of my sleeper favorites of all time. One tough sob.

As much as I love Shaw playing Quint in Jaws, knowing Marvin passed over that role is a tad disappointing

That scene in Cat Ballou was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.....

Robert Shaw versus Lee Marvin?

In my humble opinion I t's something like a tie.

I went to Tourmakeedy in Ireland to visit where Shaw died, I guess you'd say I'm a pretty big fan.

Marvin's voice would have made him serious coin today in voice overs.

One of my Top 5 Favorite actors of all-time.

The Killers (the version with Ronald Reagan) and Point Blank are my 2 favorites of his.

Prime Cut too.

Need to catch those.

Watched Cat Balou last night. Might see if I can "find" The Killers and Point Blank.

Shouldn't be hard for you. I have both movies in HD on my PC so I know they have torrents out there for both.

Check out his early 50's roles too.

The Big Heat
Bad Day At Black Rock
The Wild One
Seven Men from Now
Pete Kelly's Blues
The Caine Mutiny

Underrated early role I like, Shack Out on 101.

I had to buy the DVD when it was finally released a few years ago.

It used to come on WTBS on cable all the time in the 80's and early 90's, then I hadnt seen it in 15 years.

I think it was Sissy Spacek's first movie.

I agree- Gene Hackman is awesome- his character's name is Mary, they run a meat=processing plant in Kansas City, and his brother's name is Weenie. When they send the original hitmen/gangsters back to Chicago as sausage at the beginning of the film- classic!!!

Yeah and despite all the pulpiness it really is a beautifully shot film.

Just watched Prime Cut and I was disappointed.

I like the general premise that bad guys in KC are selling women like cattle but the execution was terrible. I get that the movie was probably fairly shocking at the time it came out but I can't get past the terrible acting and plot.

Makes no sense that Mary was so blatantly cheating Chicago and killing 3 men openly and sending the human sausage back was just too heavy handed.

Given that Mary and his gang already killed 3 men it also didn't make much sense that Nick just waltzed right up to Mary and gang.

The wheat thresher scene was almost Attack of the Killer Tomatoes bad.

I thought Hackman was terrible. Easily his worst acting performance I have ever seen but the entire supporting cast was horrible.

Marvin was fine but he was the only one. Spacek acted nothing like a person drugged for sale into sex slavery. Way too calm.

Also didn't even understand the connection Marvin had with her.

Didn't understand how everyone in KC just acted like nothing unusual was going on from the hotel to the fair.
