Hopefully someone smarter with electronics than me can help me with this situation. I have an LG nb3230A sound bar, an LG 55LB5900 and Directv Genie box. The genie box does not have an optical port so i've connected the sound bar to the tv's optical port. No sound. The TV is connected to the directv box via HDMI cable. Is it possible to get sound from the sound bar with this setup or does the sound bar need to be connected directly to the directv box? In that case, i would need to get a new soundbar.

LG Soundbar --> LG TV via optical cable
LG TV --> Directv genie box via HDMI cable

I don't see an issue, unless there is some oddball setting somewhere on your TV... assuming your soundbar input is set correctly. I use the same layout with a Vizio TV and Sony soundbar. Are you sure your connection is good(do you have light at the other end of the cable, when connected to the TV)? I've noticed that optical connections can be kinda fickle sometimes.

Check your settings on your TV and direct tv box to use external speakers

I'm using one optical from blue ray to sound bar. Other optical from TV to direct box. Both work. Just change the input on the sound bar remote.

There should be a setting in the TV's menu to select and activate sound from the TV's output.

Resolved the issue. There was a setting in TV and it was a matter of making sure I had it on the right option. Thanks for your help.
