Need help: IPhone 5 randomly turned off. Won't turn back on.

It had about 40% battery
Tried a hard reset holding down home and lock button. No response.
Tried to plug it into computer to reset and iTunes won't even recognize that it's plugged in.
It hasn't gotten wet or been dropped lately.
Any idea what the problem is?

Same thing happened to my SO's iPhone 5s (Verizon) about 3 weeks ago. iTunes recognized it, but it failed to update about 6 times. I tried about everything an end user can do. The folks at the Verizon store didn't have any better luck. She walked out with a new phone with the intent to go to the Apple Store to see what they could do. She hasn't made it yet, but if you're near one, try that. If you're not, try going to your carrier's store.

Mine did that a while back.....make an appointment at Apple Store.
They were able to my phone back on but said my battery looked a little weak so they just gave me a new phone.
