Some notes from Joel Meyers on Today's Black and Blue Report

quote:

Joel Meyers is hearing that the NBA regular season will begin in mid October, in an effort to reduce the amount of back-to-backs from schedules. (For instance, the Pelicans will play in 18 back-to-backs this season.) Considering how some injuries are thought to be propagated by overuse, such as Jrue Holiday's tibia issues, this could help curb the number of future missed games; thus, the NBA would be able to display a better overall product.

Like this. A lot. Makes sense with the week long ASB and talk of a mid season tournament. Would love to see more of a fixed schedule

On diehards pay attention before XMAS, give me more NBA time.

So does this mean that the time between the draft/training camp will be reduced? Because other than summer league, literally nothing happens during that time and it's so boring. I'd love to see that gap decreased.

Silver floated the idea of a mid season tournament, like a March Madness tourney crossed with a league cup in Euro soccer, a few months back.

quote:

“One of the things that I didn’t mention before that the competition committee talked about and seemed excited about is potentially some sort of midseason tournament,” Silver said. “Very early days in the discussion of that, but we’re looking at other opportunities in the league to create excitement.

“As one of our general managers said at the meeting, there’s very few things that you can win in the NBA. I mean, when you think about European soccer, for example, they have the FA Cup and they have other tournaments throughout the season, so I could imagine if we were to look at some sort of mid-season tournament I would imagine doing something in Vegas. This would be a terrific neutral site location.”

No the plan Silver has floated out there a few times is just cutting the amount of preseason games in half.

He said he's heard from most of the league that they find the actual preseason games rather useless.

Yeah, people bitch about NFL preseason, but I think that they need at least 3 games. The NBA's preseason seems mostly worthless, especially with many of the inexperienced guys getting the summer league. I think 3 or 4 NBA preseason games is fine.
