I always love how those who enforce the laws often make them too...

Of course it's Garners fault he got suffocated.

Last week, at a New York state Senate hearing on protests against police brutality, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton asked lawmakers to raise the penalty for resisting arrest from a misdemeanor to a felony.
"We need to get around this idea that you can resist arrest," he later told reporters. "It results in potential injuries to the officer, to the suspect. And we need to change that, and the way to change that is to start penalties for it."
Police officers in New York and elsewhere have been calling for harsher penalties since Eric Garner's fatal encounter with New York City police officers; some say Garner's death could have been prevented if he hadn't tried to resist arrest.

Well.. it is. Had he not resisted arrest, he'd still be alive.

All he had to do was put his hands behind his back.

Police also spend time at the capital drafting up new laws?

What these thug cops want is a way out.
Recently more and more people have taken notice of how these HS dropout thugs abuse people's rights, make false arrests, etc.
People are also learning that you can shoot and kill a cop, justifiably, for attempting a false arrest.
They are looking for cover, preemptively.

That's why the NYPD PBA hires lobbyist to "influence" legislation. So maybe not spending time at the capital, but they definitely pay for it.

Being a cop doesnt mean you are above the law...no matter how much you think you're Steven Segall.
When someone attempts to illegally arrest you, you have the right to defend yourself, even with lethal action.

People that die in the custody of police almost always are at fault. Just cooperate and do as they say and you'll be fine. Some groups just will never understand that.

The minions of NYC will agree to this.
NYPD runs the show in that town. Even the mayor kisses their arse.

If the cops make an unlawful arrest, and you resist, can you still be charged with resisting? I assume so.
So you'd get a felony on your record for the cops failing to do their job correctly?

Had they issued a citation for him selling cigarettes as opposed to taking him down, nothing would have happened.
Had they let off when he was saying he couldn't breathe, nothing would have happened.
It has been proven time and time again that harsh penalties are a terrible crime deterrent. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. This is just going to put more people in overcrowded prisons for even longer.
YAY!

Your link leaves something to be desired.
In one case it's stated that it would be manslaughter instead of murder.
I'd also like to know what they mean by unlawful arrest. A cop doesn't need a warrant to cuff you and bring you to jail. A few examples in your link talked about improper warrants. I just don't think that a police officer arresting you on suspicion of some crime should be fair game to be killed.

#WartimePoliceDepartment
Seriously, I'm not a cop-hater by any means. It's a really difficult job with so much temptation to do wrong and so many reasons to become cynical that it takes exceptional people with exceptional self-control and discipline to do the job well.
That said, I am someone who has never been arrested and hasn't even had a traffic ticket in 10 years and I view cops as a threat when I see them. I am as concerned with them when I encounter them as I am a suspicious individual in a dark empty street. I'm on guard and worried about what they might do.
That's a shame. And it's their fault collectively--not because all cops are dirty (only a relatively small percentage of them are) but because of the misplaced mob-mentality loyalty they seem to have with protecting the dirty ones instead of being more vigilant in looking internally to rectify their obvious problems and regain the public's trust.

A cop just cant decide to arrest people on suspicion....
Are you a cop? because that is completely wrong.
