So I've got a senerio for you. What would you say to cutting Colston and using that money to sign Michael Crabtree since the 49ers are gonna let him walk?

Just an idea so dont get all beside yourself. Love Colston and would love to have him stay a Saint until he retires but he's owed 9.7 mil this year and Crabtree is younger and has never had a Drew type throwing to him.

Thats a lie.

I would never sully Makers with a ginger!

Oh check out the list of FA RB's I posted in other thread. A lot of damn talent.

Crabtree at 100%? I'd take him over Colston if he refuses to take a significant pay cut.

Yes. He would blow up with Brees throwing him the ball.

A lot of FAs, but I think it's got more IR red flags than talent.

What does it tell you when a team desperate for WRs won't re-sign Crabtree?

When healthy and in a good mood Crabtree can be a top 10 WR, however he is rarely healthy and is mostly a primadonna.

But being in a different system and with different coaches it could change his attitude for the better.

Not to mention that having a real quarterback throwing to him for the first time would make a huge difference

He didn't have a real QB throwing to him at Texas Tech

However, I like the idea if he shelves the personality problems and can stay healthy.

Would be sad to see Colston leave.

Also the FA salary for WRs has got to be close to 10 mil and someone will pay him that and the saints don't have that kind of cash

I'd beg to differ on that...he's a very good WR when he's on, but that was really only one year in 6 years.

Look at last year
DJax: 8mil/yr
Decker: 7.25mil/yr
Tate: 6.2mil/yr
Sanders: 5mil/yr
Maclin: 5.5mil/yr
Britt: 1.4mil/yr

For similar production (average-wise), Maclin got 5.5mil, Sanders got 5mil, DJax and his headcase "gang" issues got 8mil, Decker got paid 7.25mil (overpaid), Tate as a #1 from Seattle got paid 6.2mil.

Not including this past year:
860.5 yards a season, 58.33ypg for Maclin (4 years; 59 games)
725.8 yards a season, 57.60ypg for Crabtree (5 years; 63 games)

I think that is his best comparison. Both have had worse than average QBs for majority of their tenure and both are in run-heavy offenses.

I'm going the route of more or less 5-6mil.

So here's the deal if we cut him it only frees up 4.3 mil. Once they change his roster bonus over his cap number changes to 6.9 mil. 6.9 is way better than 9.7, and could we get Crabtree for 4.3.

Does this info change anyone's opinion?

With any other organization, it probably would; but with the way Loomis works the Cap he could probably get him for $2M this year and have a roster bonus next year that will need to be converted (similar to Byrd).

But, even with all of that I would rather Colston. Without looking up his stats, doesn't Crabtree have an issue with drops? Colston has had a few bad years with drops/fumbles; but I am sure Crabtree has always had issues with these and may have 1-2 years where this wasn't an issue. So, I would rather see the Saints keep the drama less Colston at a reduced number and watch him retire with the Saints in 2-3 years.

I see what you're saying but I'm not trying to say he's a 10 mil a year WR.
I agree with your value assessment in comparison to other WRs. The position I was taking was the lack of fiscal control some GMs have when FA opens up.
I think a team will throw high dollars at him and he will go elsewhere
