I've been to original one in Memphis several times and it was always good. I've been to the one in Austin twice and it's been subpar both times.

I consider myself to be somewhat of a fried chicken connoisseur -- I've eaten all the places that claim to be the best. From Chicken Shack and Dominiques Stockyard and the State Police Cafeteria in BR, to Willie Maes and McHardys in New Orleans, Mama's in Opelousas, Lorman Country Store, Two Sisters in Natchez... You name it, chances are I've been there. And in my opinion, Gus's is the best, and it's really not close. Both the original and downtown locations are excellent. It'd likely be on my death row final meal list. As far as dipped chicken, Uncle Lou's rules. As for the expansion, I guess I'm excited... but I, too, fear that the quality will drop.

The first time I ate at the downtown location, there was a guy bringing in giant buckets of batter. I was told that he was from the original and that they make all the batter there, and that he delivers the batter to the downtown location because it's a secret recipe and not even the employees at the downtown location know what's in it. Not sure what they're gonna do now.

For some reason I've never had Gus's, but it's hard for me to imagine something better than Saw's Sweet Tea Brined chicken. Dear God. Tremendous.

Saw's in Homewood, AL? If so, they have the best spareribs I've ever had.

I've always been partial to the Avondale location (Saw's Soul Kitchen), but you're seriously talking about varying levels of greatness. When I'm in the 'Ham it's a must stop location for me.

Umm, the franchise in Memphis isn't nearly as good as the original and only genuine location of Gus's (in Mason, Tennessee).

So the answer to the question is that they've already proven they can't maintain the quality in franchised locations.

This is simply not true. They have done a fine job with their additional locations.

On two different occasions, my buddies and I did a single-blind comparison between chicken from the original and from the downtown Memphis franchise. They were quite distinct from each other each time. One was darker, saltier, spicier, juicier, but also somehow with a caramelized sweetness in the breading. The other was paler, less seasoned, less spicy, less intensely flavored, and also somewhat greasier - good fried chicken but nothing special.

The product of the two locations is inarguably different - anyone with five senses could tell them apart.

Preference is another matter, and to each his own. But for us, the original was the clear, obvious winner both times.

Heck, I've had Gus's downtown more times than I can count. And Gus's Collierville a few times, and Gus's Mason numerous times. Can't tell a lick of difference between them. But then, I'm not looking to nitpick the difference din them. I'm looking to eat some dang good fried chicken.

I haven't had their version, but I have had the sweet tea brined wings at Root. Gus's is better.

this raises so many questions - how, logistically, did you even find yourself in possession at the same time of chicken from two different stores that are 1 hour away from each other? on two different occasions? Were they both fresh - if so, how? And, why would even bother to do this? It's all just very odd...
