Above is my pawpaws NOGI award from before 1960 when they were given out to spearfishing champions... 1960 seems to be when the records started being kept...anyone know how I'd find info on who kept track before then?

NOGI awds –
I forgot that the NOGI awards turned into a prestigious award for the underwater community from DEMA, depending on when your paw paw received his it could be a spearfishing trophy or in later years it was an award from the underwater community (e.g., photographers, scientists, advocates, business, etc).
You may have some luck about early NOGI awards if you contact Tementos or one of the helldivers (check their website), they may have some history on it
Years back I was fortunate to meet Roland Rivers daughter and her father had a dive shop and was one of the 1st u/w photographers in the gulf. I was able to copy her fathers 16mm film to dvd – very cool stuff. They were involved in the early NOGI awards when it was a spearfishing competition, similar to the Tarpon Rodeo when they had spearfishing as a category some of the film Roland shot showed the NOGI competition …. BTW GITR how did replacing spearfishing w/ flyfishing work out for you …..
I also met some of the early spearfishermen and passed along copies of the DVD to them. It was a helluva night listening to their stories.
See below for a link I found on older NOGI’s:

Now that's a hoist ... no foot required. There are a few fish sammiches there. What club did your grandpa dive with?

Ontario....I have chills man...I emailed "Captain Charlie" from your second link from the big bend fishing message board...he's the guy standing behind my pawpaw with that huge Jew fish.. He's 82 and living in Florida...he's going to send me more photos... How great is the internet? Pawpaw was in the "Bajaos" skin divers club...my pawpaw was a dive instructor at the YMCA on Metairie Road.
