Asked to replace older employee with younger one - WWTOTD?

Let's say you're a 41 y/o manager at a company and the higher ups tell you that you're getting a new employee. Sounds great but its a little suspicious because you aren't in need of help.
Interviews start last Tuesday. First guy in is a great candidate. He is a high performer for a competitor. I'm thinking management will like this because we all know who he is and he has a great reputation. They tell you to hire somebody under 35 instead. Red flags going up, but okay maybe it's just the culture they want. We are zero'd in on a 28 y/o unemployed guy who is has technical skills but lacks experience so he's an unknown quantity.
Fast forward to this morning and now we have to lay off a long time employee who was instrumental to the firm's growth and success. Really sharp guy. He is 52 years old. They want him gone before new guy gets here.
Yes, the new guy is willing to work for less than half the cost, but is this not an indicator of bad things to come?

Oh this thread is going to be great evidence in the employment lawsuit that's going to get filed.

Textbook age discrimination. Watch yourself.

That sounds odd.. what type of industry? how old is managment within the company?

41 - looks as if you have about 11 years left with that company.

1/10.
If you are actually in a position to lay someone off and you have to come here to make a decision, I hope your boss sees this and cans you.

Is it discrimination if the younger guy will work for less? Serious question.

Sounds like a nice company to work for. Watch your back.

So they are going to layoff one guy and hire another....you should let the older guy know so he can get his lawyer on retainer.

Is this move all about screwing someone out of their retirement?

quote:"Higher-ups" said hire a younger guy. Salary was not a factor with this position. Neither was experience and competence, apparently.

You are also hiring your replacement

Polish up your resume. The next guy you give tour of the facilities will be your replacement.
I actually saw that happen. Second in command interviewed, recommended, and brought a guy around and introduced him. What the guy at the top didn't tell him? The guy was his replacement, not for another department head job as he thought. Two weeks later the new guy was my boss.

OP, let this be your main takeaway from this, especially since you're over 40.
