you don't have to be a "big fan" of a style of music to understand that it's pretty well done, I'm not a big fan of "trance" but I can recognize that Tool knows how to do that style pretty well. I don't have an appreciation for death-metal, stuff like Candlebox doesn't appeal to me at all, but I wouldn't say all death-metal music and musicians suck and have no talent.
Not everyone would enjoy someone like Brand X, but if you can't understand why these guys are great musicians then your appreciation is seriously limited.

fwiw, tool has a terrible fanbase but their earlier albums from almost 20 years ago were great. undertow and aenima. haven't cared for much after those two albums.

I agree with this though, I enjoy their music but their hardcore fans are extremely pretentious and force the band on people who aren't interested.
