Went to a crab/crawfish boil tonight in Abbeville. A friend of a friend showed up with ten dozen blue crabs he caught off Holly Beach. They were freakishly huge. The body of the crabs were larger than my hand. The claws were something you would see on smaller lobsters. I overheard his wife saying there was some strange tidal/weather event that brought them in.

I'm not sure what she meant as I wasn't able to ask her. Anybody here know what she was referring to?

I always listen to women when they mention crabs, so I believe...

So, about the size of a legal dungeness keeper?

Pipe down Francis, this man is talking about the sweet delicious flaky meat of the Gulf blue crab not those NW dungeness crabs.

So these crabs were so freakishly huge that they are thread worthy but not picture worthy...

mmmmmm, i roasted a couple of dungies on the pit last night. Poured lemon/garlic/butter/chili sauce over them...delicious!

OP, those are called Jimmies, or #1s. You used to catch those in the south end of the basin, in Lake Palourde.

Yeah, but no. they are almost as good as King crab though.

I also hate the fact that I have to eat 20 of em to get full.

You can not confuse taste with difficulty in removing meat...

I love the banter. As a life long but former resident of the gulf Coast and current resident of the retarded coast I can honestly say that these dungeness are just as tasty, easier to clean and much more meat per crab. They are truly awesome.

And to LSUINTHENW. ...sorry you didn't get out this season. I qound up getting 80 jumbos in three days. Ive got lump crab meat filling my freezer.

Nice...yeah, either the weather wasn't good enough for my 16' boat or I had things come up. That's ok, next winter I'll get em.

I'm looking forward to the spring Salmon season now. The first springer to be counted over the dams was 2/8 and still the only one Another month and it'll be on!

My body is ready. And so is my smoker. Just gotta get that pesky fuel leak on my outboard fixed.

Plus i have a new resource (friend) for finding the halibut. I'm gonna put some flatties on board this season too.
