You don't need to play ocarina at first but it's a must play so you are fine either way.

Yes. 3DS version comes with Master Quest.

The Monkey doesn't give you anything, but you need to beat Woodfall in order to get the Mask of Scents from the Deku Butler

As I keep playing this game, I keep thinking that these days people would claim majora's mask was a cash grab and should have been dlc. It's fun but they reused so many assets that I feel like it would happen

I don't know. Link basically has the same tools in every game.
The masks and world make Majora's Mask so different from Ocarina of Time that I don't think if it was released today people would complain about it being a cash grab.

Aside from the engine, controls, and character models, it has nothing in common with its predecessor. I really can't think of many sequels with less in common with its predecessor than Majora's Mask. That's why a lot of people don't like it because it's nothing like Ocarina of Time at its core.

In the snow temple but got caught up reading the Stormlight Archive series.
About to finish Words of Radiance but also start work tomorrow so not sure how long it'll take me to finish.

I cleared Woodfall Temple, and I'm fixing to use Song of Time to go to the mountains - will I be able to keep stuff like the bow? I'm still fuzzy on things I get to keep and don't.

You keep all the masks and major items like bomb bags and bows, but not rupees or arrows/bombs etc.
When you play the song of time I think it highlights on the lowers screen the items you would lose before agreeing to go back to dawn of the first day
