Due to the movies, I've always thought Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man were sort of the main avengers. But apparently in the comics they had Spidey and some X-Men and such.

Any comic fans- can you tell me who those really focused on?

Hopefully not Captain America because he's lame AF

There really are no Main avengers. There have been many incarnations over the years. Thor, IronMan and Hulk were on the orginal team.

Spidey, Wolverine, Vision, Luke Cage, etc etc have all been avengers I think. There are tons and tons of Marvel characters that have been on the team at some point.

The "big three" are considered to be Thor, Iron Man and Captain America.

Other long term and I'd call iconic Avengers in the classic books were Hawkeye, Scarlett Witch, Vision, Wasp and Yellow Jacket.

The Woverine, Spiderman stuff were a fairly recent happening.

Yellow Jacket

You probably should've said Hank Pym since he was not only Yellow Jacket while with the Avengers, but also Ant Man, Giant Man, Wasp and Goliath

Hank Pym wasn't wasp. That was Janet van Dyne.

You are correct. And thank you for posting this. Their line up has always changed, but Wolverine and Spider were added over 30 years after the Avengers creation in order to boost sales. Some think that Wolverine was an intricate part of the Avengers. Uhh no. X-Men yea. Spider-Man, uh no. He's traditional role in the comics is that he's a loner.

Wolverine's stint with the Avengers has been solid though. At least as good as his vs. Cyclops stuff. or his pseudo Prof. X role.

His stint was solid because again, they bring him and Spider into the comic book due to slump in sales. Wolverines being a "solid" or "key" player in the Avengers is what drives me away. It's like the execs sits in the board room and say "so, which if our titles are doing the poorest in sales? OK, just throw Wolverine or Spider-Man in the title for a year or two. Oh don't worry about the fans. We'll throw Punisher in the Avengers. Then when the fans get sick of it, We'll just reboot the entire series afterwards, and put it back to Cap, Ironman, Thor and another oldtimer". In other words, the Avengers were historically about a group of characters that didn't pull a lot of weight in sales and were not a part of an existing group, that are thrown together to create a team comic book that fans loved.

I say this because the Avengers have always been one of my favorite comic books. I blame the industry letting writers do what they want with little oversight.

But that's just me and my experiance in collecting the books.....

Actually he took up the Wasp mantel briefly when he thought she died.

No one mentioned Simon Williams? He was one of my favorite Avengers. He, Scarlet and Vision had a truly disturbing love triangle.

Bamatab is right. I should have said Hank Pym since he's had so many different personas while with the Avengers.

And he was indeed the Wasp for a brief time. (And I think she was Giant Woman for a time - read comics long enough and pretty much everything will happen).

If this were the case, the industry would be far better off imo(See Image Comics).

It's the editors that are under the EIC's direction that are running off great writers and screwing up books. This is something that DC has been suffering from too much over the last 7 years.

I will give Marvel credit. Some writers have been allowed to take some major properties in bold directions. Are they editorially mandated to take Spider-Man and Wolverine along for the ride? Yeah and I don't like it sometimes either but I've seen more than a few writers work their way around that pretty well.

Which is why the upcoming reboot of the Marvel Universe has given me a case of sads.

And that is why I'm kind of shocked that the movie universe is starting off with Scott Lang being the current Ant-Man and Hank Pym being an old man. They are missing out on so many storylines doing this. Not to mention basically cutting one of the more important Marvel character out of their movie universe from the get go.

Yea, I was wrong.

Damn heroes need to pick a name and stick with it. Schizophrenia is not a good enough excuse to change names.

Is Wasp (Janet) dead currently?

No. She was kidnapped by Havok and her current whereabouts are unknown.
