i see 'refit' LED kits for sale. what advantage do these offer over simply replacing your can light with an appropriate LED bulb?

i'm new to can lights and just assumed you could put an appropriate led bulb & wall dimmer and you'd be good to go.

Make sure you angle your lights correctly. Don't be the douche car that blinds everyone.

It depends on your can lights. When I decided to switch to LED's, I originally went your route buying LED bulbs to stick in the existing can. The LED bulbs had an odd size, much smaller that the can and the traditional bulbs I had previously used. It looked pretty bad, so I swapped them out for one of these for a much cleaner look. I had to remove some of the assembly in the existing can light, but once I did, install was super easy. By the way, that price in the link is a steal. I paid about $22 per light a few months ago.

that looks awesome! no need to replace the whole can huh? just snap that in?

some look like this; I wonder if those will need a different kit?

Is that cree dimmable?

Not sure why most LED's seem to be BR30. I know Cree does not make BR40 which is the size necessary to fully fill the cans in my house. Debating whether it is worth the effort to put in the entire new housing.

Yep, those are dimmable. It depends what your existing cans are like, but as long as that cree assembly fits over your existing can assembly it should work fine. I had to remove the outer plastic part around the existing can, then remove a wing nut and part of the inner can so I could screw in the cree to the bulb socket. They're designed to more or less snap into your existing cans. I am not a handy guy, and I had it figured out in a few minutes. If you're not sure just buy a few til you find the one you like and return the others. I'm very happy with mine and figure they'll pay for themselves in about 2 years.

Could it be because there isn't a lot (if any) air circulation inside the can? I know they say not to use LEDs in totally enclosed fixtures because you don't get air to the heat sinks and they overheat. Could be the same issue...

I don't know about retro fitting, but we just put recessed can LED fixtures in our new bathroom addition and I LOVE THEM!

It won't mean much to you guys, but as a woman it is amazing to be able to pluck my eyebrows and apply make up without using a separate lighted make-up mirror.

I also find I am using less make-up because with incandescent lights, I was actually using too much make-up to cover shadows from the lighting, thinking I had dark spots on my face.

The only thing I love more than my LED lights in my new bathroom is my fancy clawfoot tub.

Totally worth the investment.

Replacing the whole can with a new LED fixture will most likely last you longer. Simply replacing the bulb is essentially putting new technology into an older technology fixture and just leaves more room for error.

From the looks of it, a new fixture isn't much more than a retrofit.

That might be an option.
