It'll be for a Jr. In college. Mainly schoolwork type stuff, Netflix, etc.

No gaming or anything hardcore or anything like.

Go to best buy, find all the laptops under $500.

Close your eyes.

Point.

Buy.

come on, man.

FTR, I found this at $550, I think it's the best under the hood for the price point.

8GB RAM, 1TB HD, and an AMD A-8

I'm curious about taking 8GB RAM with the AMD, vs. taking 4-6 with an i3-i5 processor.

any thoughts on that?

4th gen i3 would be slightly faster, but it doesn't really matter if you never really use much CPU... Netflix (and all html5), browsing, office -- probably not going to stress any of those CPUs. Browsing habits will determine whether you'll see a difference between 4, 6, or 8GB of ram.

For your budget, just don't go less than i3/A8 and 6GB of RAM.

You can add more ram easily, but you cannot upgrade the CPU. I would get the best CPU you can afford and then upgrade RAM later.
