What is best scope for money in $160-$230 range?

Nikon prostaff?
Redfield?
Lower end Leopold?

I'll be putting one on a 308 browning bar for deer hunting

I have both the Prostaff and the low end Leupold and to me, it's a coin toss between the two.

I looked at the Redfield, but the one I looked at had a weird recticle I didn't like.

I caught the 50mm prostaff at academy for $149, which I thought was a good deal. I've killed lots of deer and hogs with both.

I like the Prostaff. I have several of them with no complaints. I use my 7mm-08 BLR more than anything . It has a pro staff 4x12x40. I got a 30-30 for Christmas and I'm putting the Prostaff 2x7x32 on it. Walmart has it for $126.

I just saw a nikon buck master on sale in a newspaper. I think it was cabelas. It was a 3-9x40 in that price range. I can't remember the exact amount. But yeah I'd go with a buck master over the prostaff.

I put a buckmaster 3x9x40 on my sons rifle. I honestly couldn't tell a difference in that and a pro staff .

Why not save some extra money over the next six to eight months and get a much better scope?

I never understood why people want to pinch pennies when it comes to scopes for hunting.

I never understood why people overpay for scopes that no one can tell the difference between.

Most hunters don't want or need a scope that costs $1000 . Where I hunt the longest shot is maybe 250 yds and I have taken that shot once. My leupold vx2 did just fine. It's kinda like a yeti. Do i want a 600or $700 ice chest? I have no need for it but there are a lot of folks that do. To each his own.

I'm not an advocate for a thousand dollar scope but won't put a $200 one on my primary rifle that I'm going to sit hours upon hours waiting for one shot. I do have a Buckmaster on a primitive rifle but the longest shot with it is 100 yards or so. It is fine for using a handful of times a year.

To each their own is correct. I can see a budget restraint at the start of the season, but not in February is all I was saying.

I'm a Leupold guy but if you're on a budget. I do have 2 of the newer Redfields. The Redfield "revolution" series, which I have, are made here in the USA. The "revenge" series are made in the Phillipines and are of lower quality. I like the 2 that I have, pretty crisp and bright.

I've saved a good bit of money through the years buying factory refurbished scopes from Natchez Shooters Supply. They usually have a good selection of Nikon factory reforms. If what you want is out of stock right now, it'll prob be in stock in a few months. I've never been disappointed w/ their factory refurb scopes. Here are a couple examples:
Nikon Coyote Special Refurb

Nikon Buckmaster Refurb

I wouldn't put a sub-$250 scope on a $1200 rifle, but if I were I would put one that's not an entry level scope on it. So go with Redfield, which is owned by Leupold Bushnell Elite 4500 series. Even certain Cabela's scopes are made by Meopta, not sure about price though.

Your right.... No one can in the middle of the day or in a store. There are huge differences when it counts.
If you really want a difference you have to go 30mm tube.
When it all comes down to it people tend to shite on the most important part of all of this..... The mounts.

I have had good luck with the 3 x 9 Burris. I have them on three rifles and they have held their zeroes and transmit more than enough light to shoot past legal shooting hours.
