Some buddies and I are looking to do a multi day hiking trip this summer in North Carolina or Tennessee. I'm having some trouble finding the perfect trail because I'm not super familiar with the area.

Does anyone on the OT have any suggestions? Ideally we'd like park and set out for 3-5 days on a big loop that would take us back to the same spot. It could potentially involve several trails if need be.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions

Uhh, how about the Appalachian Trail? Pretty much goes right through those states.

Stretch of the AT would be good.

How into hiking are you? Everyone in top shape?

Roan Highlands is great. If you really want a challenge, look into the trails into Linville Gorge. The gorge can be some real shite though, so be prepared.

The Backpacker site is pretty useful found a lot of long loops and shuttle hikes that I wasn't finding on other sites.

We're all in good shape. Its a group of guys who are graduating college and don't have the money to do trip through Europe

About half of us have experience with hiking and camping through the Marines and the other guys can keep up so we're not too worried about difficulty

I've done a 100 miles or so in Virginia, but in April my 3 sons and myself are starting at Springer Mt and going into NC, about 82 miles in 7 days.

I'm so excited I cant stand it! I wish I could do the whole thing straight through.

Take a look at Savage Gulf about 45 north of Chattanooga, essentially 3 separate loops that are joined by connector trail. Prob about 55 miles or so total. Its by far the nicest in middle tennessee in my opinion and i've hiked quite a few trails here.

How are you handling the vehicle situation?

I have a lady friend that teaches at U of Northern GA in Dahlonega, she will drop us off at Springer and pick us up in NC.

I wish I had some friends in the area. It'd make it a lot easier to do a portion of the AT

I know there is a shuttle from Atlanta to Springer and you can park at Springer for like 5 bucks just not sure how you get back from where ever you stop. The first 200 miles or so of the trail is austere.

Springer Mtn Love that area for hiking. Check the trail for bears though. They had to reroute some areas last year.

Mountain to Beach trail might be what you are looking for. Summer is extremely hot on NC trails even at elevations.

Look in the Brevard, NC area. Davidson river is a huge campground with dozens of miles of trails. Art Loeb Trail, Black Balsam...many great places with a wide variety of trails.

To Yellowfin: Yes, Fin, hiking is just like walking.

The Appalachian Trail Conference had its annual meeting a couple of years ago at Western Carolina in Cullowhee, SC. You can bet they didn't meet there to stay indoors, and it is beautiful.

Appalachian State is another great university area for hiking/backpacking.
