Okay. It was a good watch. I don't feel as strongly as some saying best of the year, definitely not of the decade.

Acting was superb. Plot was good but I thought they would do a little more with it, especially the ending.

The love interest built and then fizzled, which was an element of the plot but just kinda died off.

The character development was good but also didn't feel like it was concluded well.

I think it may be kind of an artsy thing to like endings like that. It just ended with little resolution.

He rose up and not only showed his talent but also the courage and cleverness to override Fletcher and, presumably, avoid his career sabotage attempt.

So, does Fletcher get his comeuppance? Does Nieman come into his own? Does he ever get laid?

See I disagree with this, and I don't think it falls under the abrubt ending of other movies. Sure we don't know what happens to him, but he was able to reach a level of greatness that he had been working toward and Fletcher finally had "that" student. We can make assumptions about his future and his relationship with Fletcher (probably always be enemies that share respect), but personally, I just wanted to see him show the world how hard he has worked and how great he can be. Even when he was 99% through his performance and had completely rocked it out, I was still tense, up until he stood up. So I thought it was a perfect spot to end it.

I need to watch it again, but here's my take on the ending: it was actually really dark. After Fletcher's attempt to sabotage him, he briefly retreats off the stage basically admitting defeat and likely to never take drumming seriously again. But, then he returns and shows the audience/Fletcher that he's not ready to give up, to be laughed at. Here's the thing, in that moment did he not potentially doom himself to become the next Sean Casey? You only get one more brief glimpse of his father who looks on in shock as he sees his son caught in Fletcher's hooks.

I could be way off, and there could be some little detail I'm misremembering. I think the ending was purposefully left a little open ended, however.

Remember the bar scene? How Fletcher said you wouldn't deter the next Bird by pushing him too hard or embarrassing him, because [paraphrasing] "the next Bird wouldn't get discouraged"? That's what that moment, that scene, meant.

Fletcher said that he had never had a Charlie Parker as a student. But at the end of the final scene, he realizes that Andrew is his Bird.

Just watched it, wow! Great movie, much better than that crap Birdman. I don't get the love for that. I have a new found respect for jazz drummers.

Don't know how you knock the ending. The ending was perfect.

Also the relationship was handled very well IMO. They didn't focus on it a lot. They didn't devote the time to it which was brilliant IMO because it mirrored how little time Andrew gave to it and displayed why things fizzled out and ultimately ended.

I agree, but it was the most fun I had at the movies this year, personally

It was. I was disappointed Teller didn't get a little more award buzz

No it didn't; it was very particularly and intentionally ended. It would not have fit Andrew's character to continue the relationship any longer

bullshite. It ended with a very clear resolution: Fletcher finally had his first Charlie Parker. There is plenty of ambiguity about whether or not Andrew's transformation is going to finally give him a fulfilling life: but there is no ambiguity about what he is. Andrew is the next great

I mean the actual exact ending, not the final scene overall, which is quite awesome.

The ending was filled with ambiguity for me. The only thing you really saw was that Andrew had Fletcher's respect and he could potentially be a great.

That could have been Andrew's final performance. Andrew could be the next Sean Casey. Andrew could be the next great musician.

I enjoyed the ambiguity. I don't know whether it was worth the sacrifices he had to make to achieve greatness. Maybe it was...very very few people achieve greatness.

This was my favorite movie of the year, but I haven't seen some of the other Best Picture nominees. I put it above Boyhood and Birdman, though. The ending was perfect. I wanted to see more but I think that is a good thing. I had chills during that entire scene. Incredible.
