The FCC Says Your City Can Build a Public Internet, Even If Your State Says No

?The Federal Communications Commission is going to allow two cities to ignore state laws that ban them from building community-owned broadband networks, according to chairman Tom Wheeler.
It's big news for Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Wilson, North Carolina, and it's a signal to other cities in the 21 states that have laws restricting municipal broadband that they can start considering their own networks without worrying about their state laws.
Some quick background: Many cities that are poorly served by existing cable and internet companies decide to build their own networks. It's a particularly attractive option for cities and towns in rural areas, and President Obama and Chairman Wheeler have been pushing it as something cities should consider if they are unhappy with their current service.

I hope I am not getting my hopes up, but I love that the FCC seems to be helping to put pressure on communication companies finally. Just wonder how long it will last and if it will actually end up benefiting the consumers in any way.

Good for them... sadly it doesn't prevent a state from taking away funds from a municipality if they want to stop it

What it also does is allow Google a ton more room to operate nationwide now. Whether the city can build out or whether Google does, that's their signal to start the race.

What would really get the ball rolling is giving google the same access to utility conduits and poles that cable and phone companies enjoy.

We as consumers can only hope...

St. George proponents should change their message to building a city-wide gigabit network, and I might join in.

As a resident of Lafayette, I can attest that comm companies (ATT and Cox here) put a lot of pressure on State Reps to stop Municipalities from trying to compete. Now, understand that the Municipalities (LUS in particular) have access to certain things that would not be fair in a competitive market. However, Louisiana has put legislation in place that I feel is more fair than just saying no.
