What was worse, the decision to pass the ball in that situation or the decision to call the quick slant?

For me, I don't really have a problem with them throwing in that situation. If New England is in goal line formation they are 100% selling out to stop the run.

The blunder is running the quick slant for a few reasons, a. (As Steve young said) it takes away one of wilson's best attributes which is his decision making and b. You are throwing the ball right into the teeth of the defense. The correct call would have been play action zone read with Wilson rolling right and a tight end or wr dragging across the back of the end zone(basically the same play that Baldwin scored on in the 3rd quarter). The 2 things I would not have done would be the quick slant or a play action bootleg to the left(wouldn't want Wilson turning his back to the defense in that situation). Even a fade to the corner with that press coverage would have been better.

The slant was the bad part of that call because it was into the crowded part of the field. Lots of hands around there.

Should have:

Run Marshawn from the 1 on 2nd down.

If he was stopped, call timeout and:

a) pass on 3rd down, and run Marshawn again on 4th down (if they were still on the 1).
b) pass on 3rd and 4th down (if Lynch lost yardage on 2nd down).

How hard is that??

A rollout like you want would take too much time off the clock. I agree I wouldn't throw it in the middle of the defense though. As much As I hate the play, that situation is what the fade into the corner of the end zone was made for.

Quite the contrary, Seattle wanted to burn as much clock time as possible so New England wouldn't have been able to respond(had Seattle scored). Lynch was tackled at the 1 with like 50 seconds left and Seattle had a time out.

Quick slant, no question. I can be convinced of a pass in that situation because it basically guarantees either a score or 2 more chances of scoring without being rushed. No way do you throw a quick slant into a crowd like that though. Do a play action bootleg like you mentioned and give Wilson the run/pass/throw it away option. That would be a very easy read and almost no chance of a turnover outside of a fluke.

I don't hate the call. I mean quick slant always works in Madden

The ironic thing is that the perfect route against that defensive formation would have been that same quick out that Edelman scored a td on a few minutes earlier. It's essentially the same as the slant but thrown away from the defense instead of directly into it.

Slant is OK with a single WR on that side ala Brees to Shockey in Super Bowl. Running a rub or pick a little more tricky.

I sincerely think that the pick play was the right call if you're Pete Carroll and you want Russell Wilson to be the hero. BeastMode makes the play, but the dude doesn't even talk to the media.

I joked around right afterwards saying that the commissioner called Carroll on the red phone and said "don't even think about handing the ball off..."

How do you not give Skittles the MVP if he scores. Carroll wanted Wilson to be the hero. The only bad thing that could happen would be a rookie corner makes the play of his young career, and shite...it happened.

FUSC.

But everybody knows that Lynch would have gotten it in one run if the ball was knocked down.

it's apparent that his own coach didn't want him to be the MVP.

Agreed. Any quick pass play there I would want just one on one, and not a bunch formation. Having the extra wideout there also brings in the possibility of a flag being throw for offensive p.i.

There were 108 passes thrown from the 1 yard line this season. Zero interceptions.
.
The slant was a bad call

They should have kept the exact same formation except lineup Lynch on Wilson's right side. Start the play by running play action and have Wilson continue rolling to his right, and have the inside receiver cross over the outside receiver running to his right as well. Now you have Wilson running right with a receiver in front of him running rigjt as well. 100% safe play that gives wilson the time to actually see the coverage

That picture is very telling, it is actually a good play. The receiver is open, Butler just made an amazing play, and Wilson may have lead him a little too much.

I don't blame them for throwing there. They would've had 2 more plays to run it in. You don't expect an pic throwing on the 1 yard line.

If Brandon Browner wouldn't have absolutely blown up the play by not letting Kearse get off the line of scrimmage it would have been a touchdown and we would be talking about Belichick's decision not to call a timeout after first down.

Browner was instrumental also. He jammed Baldwin and prevented him from "rubbing" Butler.
