He's made up his own straw man and is expanding on it. The status quo is 3%/year. Although it used to be 3/4/4 I think. When you're doubling inflation, I don't see how anyone could be upset with those numbers.

you do know that markets rise and fall, right?

there are currently thousands of roustabouts and oilfield support personnel across LA and TX that would love to have had the option to keep their job while taking a paycut

OIL FIELD TRASH MAKING OIL FIELD CASH stickers getting scraped off trucks at dealerships as they are traded in on used sedans all over town. As with every one of these threads, those guys who were bragging about how much they were pulling down are now whining about how it is my duty to pay more at the pump to support their lifestyle. Now you add in the Union crooks putting pressure on legitimate businesses to support their salaries and organizations and it's just too much. I may feel some empathy for the guys forced to join a union to take a job but not enough to sacrifice my money to support them. I hope this leads to a correction in the market place.

Why do only some strike?

And why are they asking for so much at a time like this?

We may be lucky to get a 3% raise this year or a portion of our bonus since it'll be hard to meet targets

There a link where the USW updates the strike list? Just checked their website and there's nothing listed.

this reminds me of convos i have with my mom (she's a big pro-union person). i don't want my future determined by others

unions are structured to prevent the best at the bottom from rising and to protect the old guard at the top. it's just their nature

i want my own work to determine my own value

striking is another way they perpetuate this system. who is going to be most hurt by this? the lower-tier workers (aka the younger ones). what can they do about it from within the union? nothing. if they rock the boat, the union will have them blacklisted. they're told to suck it up now and one day they'll be the fat cat at the top

Before Louisiana reduced its revenue forecast, oil production was projected to generate as much as $1.5 billion of the $9.9 billion in estimated revenue for the fiscal year through June, according to Greg Albrecht, chief economist for the Legislative Fiscal Office.

All of you celebrating the lower cost of gas and reveling in the O&G folks losing their jobs, read the quote above a few more times and let that sink in. That $1.5B-$9B is gonna hurt everyone considerably. And for those of you pissing and moaning about cuts to higher ed and health care this might shed some light on why LSU will get a nice little cut as well.

well if an employer and a group of employees want to voluntarily bind themselves to agreements, then they should be allowed to

i don't think unions should be given special protection by the federal government, though

i have no problem with unions as a concept, but i just don't have a desire to subject myself to that sort of system.

in other words, i don't see what the upsides to being in a union would be for me

I don't get it

"oil field trash" are only a small portion of the oil and gas industry. And so what. They work hard. I don't understand why the OT wishes misfortune on so many people

well that particular industry gets targeted for 2 reasons (both apply only in the "good times")

1. the self-proclaimed "oil field trash" loves acting like their life is a rap video and showing off all their bling/toys

2. the educated workforce that earns significantly less than the uneducated workforce, in the face of #1, isn't going to take kindly to that culture.

it's just a dual-sided group identification process

the thing is, that only applies during the good times. oil field work is a volatile market and the "good times" are only temporary. that's why they make so much. they should be saving the excess for the learn times (like now). they don't (which is the only way they can sustain #1 above), so not it's time for the roles to flip and that non "oil field trash" to talk about how great their life is and how much it sucks to be the other guy
