but would they have to if the unions at other plants didn't exist?
Even if one plant is not unionized the market is affected by unions at other plants
There is that aspect, hard to say. I do agree with stout that it would be close to thw same price.
Part of the high price is for retention of knowledge. Believe it or not there is a little more than being able to munch on fritos and watching movies.
Competition between each site is one thing, but competing with outside fields would mean lots of turnover. A recent class of new hires had almost half with 4 year degrees and 95% with at least a two year degree.
The pay/benefits have attracted very qualified individuals that could bolt to another field.

I got floated to the peds ER once back in BR years ago. Night before school starts. Kid comes in at 2 am with an itchy scalp. Ask him how long it's been itching...5 years. Kid has dandruff and was trying to get out of school the next day....and his mom brings him to the ER for that

It better prepares them for future positions when they turn nonessential.

No shite.
It has become comical that union members pay dues that end up supporting obama and then pay out of their pocket to support republicans.
This right here!
fighting tigers, have you ever asked for (and actually received) a breakdown of where your dues are spent? I have asked before and only received info on the portion that stayed with the local.

Never cared where my dues went, kind of like not caring what state farm does with my insurance premiums. Just wish they were less.

It was actually a little worse than that.
They was 7, 6, 6%. Plus a bunch of demands about more people, etc.

The 6% deal is merely a bargaining tool. They knew they weren't getting that. They will meet in the middle between 3-4% most likely

Didn't they propose 10, 10, 10 one contract.

It's not just union members that do this. Pretty sure the general public is just as bad.
When I first got my union job some of the old hands told me to save up at least 6 months of pay just in case. I've always kept at least that much money available.

and are compensated for that sacrifice.
Who doesn't make sacrifices?
Healthcare workers make sacrifices
Famers and farmhands
Salespeople
truck drivers
cops and firefighters
military personel
The list goes on and on.

Yep.
I have worked with some of the most frugal people ever when in union jobs. I'm talking tying a plastic bag a certain way so it can be used multiple times for bringing their lunch.
They make engineers look like Birdman at a strip club.

I don't think he was trying to bitch. At least I hope not. If I understand him correctly he is simply saying these are some of the reasons the job pays well. Most ppl don't want to work weekends, nights, holidays, etc. so the better pay sweetens the pot. Of course we all know the odd hours we work going in, but understand we are being paid well to work those hours.

Just talked to local union rep, it's looking like Norco will be the next to go, since it's a joint Shell/Motiva site and the USW wants the biggest impact on Shell.
Shell didn't care about the 6% raise, and that was signed off on quickly. Norco and Deer Park both already have agreements locally, but have to strike if National USW says so.
The gist of what he told me was behind the strike was that for the past 20-30 years the O&G companies have been taking stuff away each contract and not giving any (pensions, bidding processes, health care and triple time (yes at one point on holidays you got triple time) etc.)
Companies were also choosing to hire 12 instead of 20 and just tell current employees to work added OT and forgo vacations in order to save money. That's just a small amount of what's being discussed though, but a little insight FWIW.
