Then I'm sure she has similar stories about her hospital cutting back as well.

No doubt. Have yet to see the thread about how nurses have been overpaid the last decade and a half though.
Sure it is coming.

she says they are short staffed already and dont plan on hiring anyone new. i dont get the reasoning behind it. hospitals are very profitable.

Yeah but they don't strike over having to work horrible hours( That is not why they are striking now. I don't know what the shitty hours comment was about. my wife's schedule is just as shitty.
It was about the 9 to 5 people bitching about how much money oil workers make. They make a lot of their money because they work a lot, spend a lot of time away from their families on nights, weekends, holidays, and such.

Why are you making yourself out to be the victim?

And he's too dumb to see it.
Everyone makes some sort of sacrifice for their career.

I'm surprised we haven't seen someone in the military post yet

Those types are the downside to working in that industry.

So do medical staff working in a hospital. We sacrifice a lot and hold people's lives in our hands. And we don't get any of those things you are whining about not getting. Like I said...I would be THRILLED to even get a 2% cost of living raise right now. I haven't received ANY kind of raise in several years. And bonuses??? Unless you count the coffee mug with the hospital logo on it I got for nurse's week as a "thank you". Hell....many hospital workers are nervous about keeping their jobs right now with how much Obamacare has frickED us up.

Not with Obamacare they are not. Obamacare has changed how hospitals are being reimbursed. Some hospitals(like the one I work at) will no longer receive MILLIONS of federal grant money each year that they used to receive to help operate. We used to get 50 million a year because the community we serve is mostly immigrants and people without insurance...the patients that for profit hospitals do NOT want and will do what they can to send to us once the patient is stable. We no longer will get that money and everyone is nervous about it.
As for the nursing staff...hospital administrators only see nurses as a number. Whenever there is a budget issue...less nurses means more money they can save. They don't care that it also put's patient's lives in jeopardy because you are stretching nurses really thin to the point of some seriously dangerous situations that if you really knew about...you would never want you or a loved one to be a patient at those hospitals.

Again, if you're one of the ones working a day job, STFU. O/G workers sacrifice a lot.
What kind of sacrifices exactly?

Can't wait for next years patriotic Oscar bait "American Driller" starring Larry the Cable Guy.

I know where you're coming from, but if the priority of hospitals is not a fiduciary one to their shareholders, then maybe they shouldn't be a private enterprise.

How dare those evil O/G workers asking for a cost of living raise.

6% is NOT a cost of living raise.
It's exactly the kind of ineptitude that union leadership has shown that has led to declining membership and plummeting public approval of their existence.

In the last year it has amazed me how similar nursing and industry are in the way they operate.
