if you left it at that, then I'd be with you 100%. It was the other drivel that lost you support.

Asking for a raise and demanding a raise, signing bonus, benefit package , and eliminating or reducing the company's choice in hiring contractors are 2 complete different things

If the union knew how poorly the vast majority of their members mishandled their money, they would never push for a strike. Greater than 50% can't afford to miss even one check.

No shite? I have never seen any research on it. I don't know anyone's personal financial situation though.

Word on the street is USW is trying to figure out of Motiva Convent or Shell Norco is going offline next.

Also, Deer Park and I believe Norco had already come to an agreement at the local level, the strike orders are coming from the top of USW.

If you were employed and evaluated on merit, you could probably get one, often.

Exactly, I get tired of hearing any profession(term used loosely) bitch about "all they do" whether it's a roughneck, plant worker, teacher, nurse, etc.

If they don't like it maybe it's time to see how green the grass is on the other side of the fence.

know where you're coming from, but if the priority of hospitals is not a fiduciary one to their shareholders, then maybe they shouldn't be a private enterprise.

Many hospitals are not for profit though and don't have shareholders.

I get that they have to run a business...but you are still a hospital....your business is to save people's lives. You hold people's children, mothers, fathers, etc's lives in your hand. There have been study after study that shows that mortality rates go UP when you increase patient/nurse ratios. In some situations...making that nurse take an extra patient to save the hospital money could mean she is too busy and doesn't recognize early enough another one of her patient's going bad. Also....now hospitals are gonna be reimbursed on patient satisfaction scores. How will having less staff to care for patients help those scores? Sad that because a patient didn't get orange juice fast enough could mean less $$ the hospital gets for reimbursement.

This. i've heard that the local was settled also and now on to the USW national saying who shuts down next.

Again, if you're one of the ones working a day job, STFU. O/G workers sacrifice a lot.

which is why maybe they should be public institutions. If something is so sacrosanct, why let business forces dictate?
I'm not saying I want all public hospitals, just pointing it out.

Hard to save any lives if you have to shut down.

Yeah, that's what I don't get. We agreed at the local level but bc USW didn't get what they want at ExxonMobil or something people that work at shell have to strike bc USW national says so.

Horse shite.

Are the people you're caring for paying out of pocket or with insurance they pay for?

If not I'm not concerned with their level of care

It's funny how you say things like "pay more like the rest of us" but then pull this card.

This argument works both ways, you realize that right?

Nah I get what you are saying. It's just a shitty situation all around. I'm just keeping close watch at my work to see what happens. Putting some major life decisions on hold at the moment to make sure I'll still have a job there.

But...it's just the way healthcare is now. One of the nurses I work with has worked a long time and she's seen the waves it goes through regarding staffing. I chose to be a nurse, I can ride out the waves or get off the ride anytime I choose.

It is what eventually breaks unions. Basically like holding a gun to a hostages head in order to get your way.
