I mean I would just use my .270, but if he's buying a new rifle why not get the long gun equivalent of The Judge™

Yeah - overkill for elk.

What about .300 RUM?

Rifle weight is not really an issue, as long as it's at or under 8.5 lbs. with scope,

Going to be on horseback?

Another reason I'm going with the .300 is it's a bit lighter and not as long. I put in a lot of miles on foot and pushing through the trees and thick brush in Oregon takes its toll on me by the end of the day.

As for the .300 WSM-I've never really bought into the WSM mags. In comparable barrels, their ballistics fall between the non-magnum calibers and the true magnum calibers

Shooting with hand loaded ammunition yes, but most people buy off the shelf ammo. With factory loads the 300WSM actually (only marginally) outperforms a 300 WinMag.

Probably but I've used mine for deer. If you're hunting in bear country it's nice to have.

I gave the 3 choices in the OP because my friend that is the PH recommended them. He said any of the 3 will do, but be prepared to shoot 300-350 yards for a good bull. I've heard the stories-.243's, .270's, .308's, 30-06, etc. kill elk every year. But I plan on buying a new (used) gun (or building one from a Mauser receiver I have), and am looking for suggestions from those that have shot the 3 calibers suggested, particularly in anger at a Wapiti.
I doubt you find many folks that have shot many of the calibers you mentioned at an elk

But if that is the opinion you are looking for, good luck, as they say on Shark tank, I am out.

I would invest in some new optics for my .280 and call it a day, but I don't desire to hunt dangerous game now or in the future.

I'd use a .270, but a .338 win mag would be pretty cool to own and would definitely be better for elk killin

I'm still intrigued by the whole .300 RUM concept - I can see carrying a Power III to handle most anything in a crisis if you're in dangerous predator/game territory (and I'm not sure if it is a 1-shot solution for a brown bear, but aside from that) in the U.S, or moose, whatnot. Power II probably good for Elk and you can take whitetail and probably boar with Power I - which is the "aught 6" equivalent load.

Because of the limited platforms (I'm still boycotting Remington) - I've been reluctant to go much further, but I remain intrigued.

When I build a rifle it is most likely going to be chambered in 300 RUM.
