After more than a decade serving signature sushi creations and family-favorite hibachi cuisine, Derek Chang’s Koto of Japan is closing its doors. The restaurant’s last day is Saturday.

Chang, who moved his restaurant to 2562 Citiplace Court nearly five years ago from its previous, longtime location of 3023 College Drive, will be returning to his native Taiwan, where most of his family still lives, to begin doing missionary work. A spokeswoman at the restaurant tells Daily Report that Chang had been considering the move for some time, and when one of his hibachi chefs recently left he decided it was time to go home.

“He took it as kind of a sign that it’s time to move on and pursue something he has wanted to do for a long time,” says Sarah Hughes, a longtime employee of the restaurant.

Chang is in talks with a potential buyer, who wants to take over the business and continue to operate it in the same location using some of Chang’s recipes, Hughes says. However, no deal has been finalized.

I hope this new owner keeps the cucumber salad.

Sad to lose a great neighbor. Let's hope the new owner has the gusto to revitalize the location!

I think the new location sucks unfortunately compared to the old location.

Maybe if they do something with the movie theater it could be great. I say tear it down and make a mini shopping\bars\restaurants type of place

I believe they are currently redoing it to be one of those "upscale" movie theaters with dinner and/or drinks.

The theatre is going to be a movie tavern. Old news boss! It's direct competition for Alamo Drafthouse.

Great guy and sushi chef, and his sister is a sweetheart.

Hope Derek is truly chasing his dreams. He took on a serious load in buying and renovating the new location. Which despite an huge upgrade in shinier new bricks-and-sticks and capacity, doesn't have the curb appeal of his original/Amy Baw's old College Koto location.

Hope the new place keeps The Bomb, The Hawaiian, Four Seasons,etc..recipes.

Sad to hear this. Koto was my favorite sushi spot in BR (old location). Never made it to the new place. Derek was always very friendly and could make you feel at home. Plus the sushi was always excellent.

Probably was my favorite dinner spot in all of Baton Rouge!
