It is with deep sadness that we must inform of the passing of Lt. Col. Edward J. Saylor, engineer-gunner for Crew 15. Ed, 94, passed peacefully yesterday morning at his home in Enumclaw, Washington. There are no plans for a service and the family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Ed's memory to the Wounded Warrior Project.

There are now three remaining Doolittle Raiders - Lt. Col. Richard Cole, Lt. Col. Robert Hite and Staff Sgt. David Thatcher.

Agree with the RIP but I think LTC Saylor would disagree that the world is a better place....today anyway. It was but no longer. Not trying to derail the thread. We need more people like the Doolittle Raiders.

It is seriously sad. We are losing the last of a generation that has lived through more than any of us can imagine.

We knew this time would come. Figure the guys who ran away from home, lied about their age and enlisted at 16 in late '44 - those would be about the youngest possible combat vets - and they're all turning 87 this year. In 10 years, 99.9% of that generation will be gone.

But the job done by that generation - and I'll include our allies in that war as well - staggers the imagination to this day.

The U.S. produced almost 1/3 of a million aircraft and over 100k tanks and self-propelled guns.

Just to stay with Doolittle's Raid - ground based aircraft were launched from aircraft carriers with no way to land again. It was a borderline suicide mission (obviously, the plan to get to China worked for some). I can't imagine our current crop of leaders being so audacious.

Not at all. No way they'd call make a call to do a D-Day type landing if it was necessary. The set of balls that these men had and the way our country came together is nothing short of astounding.

RIP sir

And another thing about the raid, generally - while it did very little damage in real, practical military terms, the intent was always psychological - Japan had been bringing war to others ever since they industrialized. Now, we brought the war home to them.

It is fair to say that prior to the raid - Japan won every major engagement. After the raid, with very, very few exceptions, the U.S. won every major engagement.

Coincidence?
