NOPD's new crime fighting plan

WBRZ ran a piece on this mornings show stating that NOPD is requesting "former officers to come back and work shifts as "unpaid Reserve Police Officers." Is this actually their latest plan to fight crime?
I know they have an epidemic of people quitting for a variety of reasons. What makes them think those folks will come back for free?

I assume they get paid when they work ( like mardi gras, other high volume times)
just not on payroll
just not on payroll

Reserve officers DO NOT get paid. LINK
quote:
Reserve officers are unpaid, commissioned volunteers who patrol high crime areas at night and fill special assignments across the city.
Members of the reserve division are required to volunteer for police duties at least 24 hours per month. Reserve officers who work at least 36 hours per month are eligible to work paid details through the Office of Police Secondary Employment.

If this is in fact the case, NOLA reserve officers are some dumbasses.

Do regular officers really only get paid $10/hr

That right there is the reason most will be "volunteering" their time

Good, if their is a way they can't make good money as a Security/Detail officer by helping out for free, then I'm all for it. Hell, make more officers available for detail. Detail officers are very visible, and visible police presence is a huge step forward. You can go a long time in the city driving around without seeing an officer. They need more.

I've got detail officers that pay their mortgage off of me. That's how big of a deal details can be to an officer.

Does this include the former officers out on parole?
ETA: Reserve officers generally are unpaid except when they work special details.

this is better?
I mean when your original plan is to not do anything, there's nowhere to go but up

Details are the difference between a $40K annual salary and a $70K annual salary.

I know, growing up my neighbor was a Seargant in the local force, but he worked nights doing detail at a sports goods store. He had so many toys, they had everything, jet skit, shrimp boat, four wheelers. He always said Detail made him more (per hour) than police work.

A reserve officer who puts in 36 hours a month can work an unlimited amount of details. You realize that there are officers and deputies making well over $100k/year on just details?

The amount of money in details is pretty legit and they are very worthwhile for businesses. I have great security and they look out for me as well. The last thing they want is a very easy detail getting shut down.

For the sheer joy of shooting and beating the shite out of people.
