One of the first scenes, where two men giddily laugh as they smear shite on each other, does all the necessary explaining for his growing insanity.

Now, they just live among the locals—he (Leonid Yarmolnik) as Don Rumata, a nobleman in the brutal, decrepit Kingdom Of Arkanar—and meet up once a year to swap stories, get (literally) shite-faced drunk, and tear up the empty medieval countryside in their tank
IN!!!

I honestly can't tell if the OP is serious or not

Um, I'm completely serious.
The novel this movie is based on was written by the guys who wrote Stalker, if anyone cares.

I watched the "trailer," and read both reviews. That thing looks like a horrible slog. Why would I wanna watch that for three hours?
From the second linked review:
If plot and narrative are barely there, then it's not a masterpiece, sorry. This movie sounds like it has more in common with Salo than, you know...a good movie.
Eta...the premise seems pretty damn cool, but the execution sounds like a step away from torture porn. And the trailer looks like the project had a budget of about $10,000.

Plot and narrative take the backseat here; it’s there, but trying to comprehend it would be a fool’s errand.

Hard to Be a God is an exhausting, disgusting, and draining experience. It’s also a complete masterpiece.

There are lots of movies that have little plot...
This movie reminds me a lot more of Marketa Lazarova or Valhalla Rising than Salo, or any other torture porn movie (I haven't seen anything in reviews I've read linking the movie to torture porn...maybe missing something though).

Review I read said it was an absolute mess that tries to be high minded while simply sucking.
ETA: What about that trailer gives you any indication as to what the movie is about or that it will be "amazing?"

It was in the print version of the New Yorker, so I can't link it.

Pretty sure I was physically angry when Valhalla Rising ended, hated it. I'm not a Refn hater.

I didn't think it was a masterpiece or anything, but I really liked it.

It looked like the music video for Dio's Holy Diver on an even lower budget. Looks like shite.

I bet you're the kind of person that thinks a movie like Eraserhead is "genius," aren't you..?
