yes i did. I worked on the external tank for Martin Marietta at Michoud.
we watched every launch live on monitors in the facility. It took a few minutes for it to register with everyone exactly what we had just seen.

I was 7 and remember we watched it on tv in our classroom....along with pretty much every other classroom in the U.S.

I was on a field trip at Stennis and watched it live with my class. Needless to say, that kind of put a damper on the rest of the field trip.

I was seven as well. we had it on tv, my teacher turned it off and left the room. when she came back she gave us busy work- and we all knew she was crying. maybe only time that year every kid did exactly what we were told. no one even talked once.

Wait a minute. I was in 4th grade at recess when this happened.
Then in 10th grade we took a field trip there and it was in full swing. Very impressive place.
So they fired all yall and hired new people later? Can you educate us on that facility in detail after the Tragedy?

I was only one, so I have no memory of this, but I did remember being outside in Texas and watching Columbia burn up in the sky above my head as it was happening. I'm sure what I felt was similar to the Challenger tragedy.

The most heartbreaking footage is of the one of Christa's parents watching the launch and the camera catching them seeing the explosion and realizing what really happened.

The laid a lot of us off. Reassigned some others. some (the more senior employees) got to keep their jobs.
The place didn't shut down completely but after april of 86 it probably employed 1/4 of the people it employed prior to challenger.
the challenger explosion was 1/28 by 4/6 i was unemployed.

My mom has always told me her and I were in a Sears and she happened to be near the TVs when this happened. I was 1.5.

I was in 2nd grade class watching it. Never forget that thing blowing up or the terrible feeling we all got immediately afterwards. Bad deal.

Years after the tragedy, I ended up becoming friends with one of the widows and actually rented her house for a brief time in the mid 90's. She put on a nice facade but she was sort of lost in it all even that long after. And their kids were so troubled and had so many questions about their Daddy.
I'm sorry you lost your job that day, but so many others had it way worse. It still makes grown men cry when the subject comes up. I've lived in the same neighborhood as a lot of engineers that worked that program and it's not something they like to discuss.

not sure what you mean by "detail" but, we were all brought into a meeting and instructed not to talk to media. Not to speculate on anything involving the program or the launch.
during the next few months production basically stopped.
we went from putting out a tank a month to maybe 1-2 a year.
