Perhaps they should try a female version starring Melissa McCarthy and Lena Dunham.

I see the similarities, but a "Sci-fi Rise of Islam?" No.

I can point of the differences as well as the similarities, but again, I'm not about to get into a religious discussion here on the M/TV Board.

In a lot of ways it is. There is nothing to agree to disagree about. If you don't see the symbolism then you missed much of the point of the novel.

Also, this isn't a "religious discussion." It's a discussion about the themes of a book that has major themes that center around religion and its effect on society. You can't really separate how religion is portrayed in Dune from the story because it is so integral.

Dude you're completely stoned. Herbert even liked Lynch's version. That film, while imperfect, was ambitious and succeeded on many levels.
I loved it. I still watch it when it comes on even though I own the DVD

The worms are the camels...

This might be pushing the symbolism a little far.

I saw the movie on the big screen when it came out. I hadn't read the books yet and I was a little lost, but overall I was blown away. There's some great performances there, Sting is awesome, the guy that plays Baron Harkonnen is over the top awesome, and Brad Douriff is fantistic.

The mini-series is also pretty good for what budget is was afforded.

I enjoyed the first sci fi miniseries. It's pretty bad acting/set/effects wise, but it does a decent job with the story.

Children of Dune was just terrible.

I think an episodic series would be the best way to go, in order to flash out the backstory of all the houses and how things work in that universe.

The thing is, I'm not sure if there's an audience for it right now. As much as we like the books, the public's impression of Dune is largely from the movie, and a lot of people bang on that movie as garbage.

Now, I actually liked the movie, but that's irrelevant considering the hordes of people who ridicule it in pop culture.

Getting a series launched like that to overcome the negative perception on the franchise, along with the fact that everyone who would be interested in it knows how it ends... ugh... sounds like an uphill battle.

It might take a few more years (decades?) before we see a GoT-style episodic for Dune. People need to forget the story again.

Think about the fedaykin. They were most certainly terrorists running gurilla campaigns against the super power harkonen.

I don't really know exactly how terrorists would fit into it because I think that terrorism was probably viewed a lot differently when Herbert wrote the first books. They definitely were guerrillas though that might be better compared to the forces in Lawrence of Arabia, and Paul is an amalgamation of T.E. Lawrence and the prophet Muhammed.

And the ending that Brian Herbert gave us was just awful. Brian's "House" prequel books were pretty good, but everything else just seemed silly and forced.

I can't express profusely enough how much I hated the Brian Herbert ending books. They were so lame and poorly written. I can't really believe that's the vision that Frank had.

The only one of the prequel books that I read was the House Atreides book when I was younger(middle school aged). I remember it being ok but definitely shallower than the original books. You never really know about things you read/watched at those ages though. My faded memory could be making it better than it was.

A great peformance by a non-actor - that's for sure. Not ready to say awesome, but I'm not going to dispute you.

Kenneth McMillan should have gotten more work. Played a great "heavy" like Charles Durning or Brian Dennehy.

Another guy who inexplicably got little work compared to the performances he delivered. He's kind of funny looking, so he carved out a niche in Sci Fi (where that's a plus, I guess) - he gave, arguably the best guest appearance in Babylon 5 AND ST: Voyager.

I never watched Deadwood, but he was reported to be fantastic in that, as well.

I read the House prequels (Atreides, Harkonnen, and Corino) before I read the original books. Obviously the original series was better, but I thought the House prequels were a good springboard into the originals.

The Butlerian Jihad books were a step down, in my opinion. Once I read the ending of the series that Brian Herbert wrote, I saw that the Jihad prequels were just a way for him to shoehorn his nonsense into the Dune saga.

I tried to read the books that Brian Hebert wrote, that took place between the original novels (interquels?), but I couldn't finish any of them.

Here is a forum where they only discuss the original books. They hate, HATE, the new books.

I rather like the 80s movie its unfairly maligned. I have no idea how it compares to the book though since I never read it.

I wouldn't mind this one being remade.

It's a film that could actually benefit from modern day special effects.

So, is Star Wars about the rise of Islam as well?

Maybe. Lucas did steal some concepts for Star Wars from Dune.

No, of course not. But the Rebel Alliance were terrorists.
