I just read the first book recently then watched the movie and the first miniseries.
I liked the miniseries better just because I think it was able to do a better job encapsulating the Dune world. If the movie had been three hours like Lynch originally intended I think today it would have been held in higher regard even with the cheesy effects (who signed off on blocks as a shields? That had to look odd even in 1980) .
Can you imagine any of TLOTR movies being cut by 1/3? It just kills the fleshing out that's necessary when you are world building.
I didn't hate the movie.
The book is amazing. HBO would have to series it to do it justice.
And even if he did, he messed up then. The fedaykin are supposed to be elite warriors.
