Dune... What are we going to do about this one?

So I'm about 50 years behind and just finished the first book. While reading I thought I would try and visualize Lynch's version to try and get an idea of what the hell he was trying to do. (Btw I like Lynch's because it's so awesomely silly.) Well about 100 or so pages into it I said frick that I'll use my own imagination because I have no idea what he was trying to do and still don't. Now while finishing up the book I was looking into information about the Dune miniseries to see if I might enjoy watching those (still on the fence) when I stumbled upon the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune. Well I have it set to DVR when it comes on Starz here in like a week, but last night I started watching a bootleg copy but stopped because it had no subtitles and i don't speak French or Spanish. While I liked what Jodorowsky had visualized, I don't like that he was going to make Dune just for complete shock value. (And if you've seen the documentary and disagree that he wasn't, then tell me how showing a eunuch have his blood drawn and then watch as that blood is shoved up a vagina and then travels to the egg to fertilize isn't trying to pull some shite. Especially in the 70s.) So my question is:
What is to be done about Dune? Is it to be left in development hell with only a silly 80s adaptation and a couple of Sci-Fi Channel miniseries to leave behind in a strange film legacy or are we ever going to get what we should/deserve? Which is too much for me to describe in what I have in my mind's eye.
Eta: The reason I ask is because I know how much this board hates reboots and remakes, so it's really more of a question of what about this reboot or remake?

They wont touch that movie for a long long long time. Its basically a scifi version of the rise of islam. They even go on a jihad in the sequels.

Spice is $1.70 a gallon. We'll be sending troops to Arrakis by the end of the year.

While there are some similarities in the use of terminology and environment, if anyone thinks that the first Dune book is about rise of Islam... they should tell their drug dealer they just want pot next time, that the meth is why too much for them.
Just remember jihad and crusade are synonyms.
Also they can tune down the verbiage and change dialog to fit the need of the audience.

Hell of a lot more than that. The stories are quite similar.

I'm not going to get into a religious debate on the TV/Movie board but let's just say we don't agree.

Maybe my alltime favorite novel but I'm not optimistic that it will ever be adapted any better than the previous attempts.

been looking for a directors cut of the original that Dino De Laurentiis did, there was some particularly grotesque and ghoulish Harkonen business that was cut from the original edit, when Disney bought the film. Considering it was made at a time when Star Wars was still high tech, it's probably amazing it turned out as well as it did.

The miniseries actually does a really good job of faithfully telling the story. The acting sucks at times. The production value is low. The costumes are silly. But these are just things that a person has to get used to if he is a fan of science fiction. It's worth watching once you finish up the first three books.
I actually really enjoy the 80's movie. It has a cool gritty and bizarre feel which is fitting to the books. The performances in general are actually really good in supporting this imo. Some of the actors are pretty accomplished. It just more or less failed in delivering the intended messages of the books.
I haven't seen the jodorowsky film. No comment.
All in all the books would probably be too difficult to be satisfactorily adapted to movies. Maybe a higher budget series/miniseries would do the trick. Especially from the second book onward a lot of the books become about philosophical musings, more politics, and generally what is taking place in people's minds. Herbert's universe and ideas get pretty damn complex. The best medium for this is probably just print.

If you don't see the similarities then you are missing out on a lot of the intentional symbolism. Arrakis is the middle east. Arrakeen ends up being Mecca. The spice is oil. Paul is like a super, godlike Muhammad. Herbert has explicitly said this was his intention. There are some things changed around obviously to tell his science fiction story and make the points he wants to make.
You might just need to start reading messiah for this to come into focus. A lot happens in the time between the books that you find out pretty much as soon as you start reading.

I see the similarities, but a "Sci-fi Rise of Islam?" No.
I can point of the differences as well as the similarities, but again, I'm not about to get into a religious discussion here on the M/TV Board.

I saw the movie before the book which probably enabled me to enjoy the movie. Like the extended edition more than the theatrical cut.
I originally liked the Sci-Fi mini-series but on rewatch they were even weaker than the movie. Truly dreadful acting by several members of the cast.
I really wanted to see God Emperor but I imagine the cost vs previous ratings made it a no go.
Frackin Berg quit as director of the remake and went on to make Battleship.

I'd love to see a movie or mini series that accurately portraid the novels.

My favorite books as well...
I think they need to do a Game of thrones type TV series on a pay channel to come close to capturing the books.

Dude you're completely stoned. Herbert even liked Lynch's version. That film, while imperfect, was ambitious and succeeded on many levels.
I never watched the mini-series.
