Picked up a king cake yesterday from the Maurice's in Fat City. It was good. Read a previous review here that gave it a poor rating because it was dry. I found it to be quite the opposite. It also had a really good "glaze" over it.

They also make filled king cakes. Has anyone tried one of these beasts?

The bottom one won at the King Cake Festival, I'm pretty sure.

Was there an overall winner for the king cake festival or just the few categories?

Bavarian creme filled is the goat in the metro area.

Anybody who tells you otherwise just don't know.

I love Bavarian crème. I hate it when I see pastries filled with whipped cream instead of Bavarian crème. But I guess I avoid calories by not eating those pastries that aren't filled with Bavarian crème.

Depends of the cream. If it's the decadent heavy whipping cream at 50 Calories per Tbsp vs a whipped topping then you're in for trouble. I'd rather the heavy bc it's just sooooo much better, noms.

Maurice's is fantastic.

This is what we ordered from there for my rehearsal dinner party last Friday. It's their Ponchatoula King Cake...and it's fricking awesome.

Yep, we've purchased many cakes from here. They have always gone above and beyond in creating some really awesome stuff for us.
