DGDT: The Persecution of the Inverted

I'm not sure how it started, but for as long as I can remember, I've always played with the y-axis inverted. If I'm playing kb/m, it's set "normal", which I think is a snide way of classifying that.
Is inverted more common than I remember? Inverted players used to catch a lot of shite for some reason.
Fired up Witcher 2 last night, and got through the tutorial. After that last fight, the game recommended easy mode. Jerk
But when did this come out? Graphics are ok, but the character models and movement look a bit rough.

I guess it started with Goldeneye, but I really remember having to set it that way with Halo. Or maybe Timesplitters 2, the game I had my first taste of dual analog.
