I personally think it's either R'hllor or the Lord of Harmony.

And for those that don't know what "ASOIAF" is its A Song of Ice and Fire. More popularly known as Game of Thrones.

Discuss.

And no, I'm asking from the book perspective not necessarily the TV series.

The Faith of the Seven. It is based on the idea of the Holy Trinity. There are 7 "persons" in one entity

No I asked from book perspective. If there was a Book Board I'd ask there.

Not to mention the Seven have the same structure. High Septon (pope), septas/septons (nuns and priests, and the Faith Militant which is basically a shoutout to the old crusade type shite. So it's basically the Catholic Church.

Eta: Yea this shouldn't be on the OT

ASOIAF is a book, therefore not a TV show. If I would've asked about GoT then, no shite, I'd be in the Movie/TV Board. This isn't from that perspective since GoT misses a lot of stuff.

Not really, if you look at the book's Wiki page it's based on a whole number of cultures.

quote:

The novels and their adaptation derive aspects of their settings, characters and plot from various events of European history.[7] A principal inspiration for the novels is the English Wars of the Roses[8] (1455–85) between the houses of Lancaster and York, reflected in Martin's houses of Lannister and Stark. Most of Westeros, with its castles and knightly tournaments, is reminiscent of High Medieval Western Europe. The scheming Cersei, for instance, calls to mind Isabella of France (1295–1358).[7] She and her family, as depicted in Maurice Druon's historical novel series The Accursed Kings, in particular, inspired Martin.[9] Other historical inspirations for elements of the series include Hadrian's Wall (which became Martin's great Wall), the fall of Rome, the legend of Atlantis (ancient Valyria), Byzantine "Greek fire" ("wildfire"), Icelandic sagas of the Viking Age (the Ironborn) and the Mongol hordes (the Dothraki), as well as elements from the Hundred Years' War (1337–1453) and the Italian Renaissance (c. 1400–1500).[7] The series' great popularity has in part been attributed to Martin's skill at fusing these disparate elements into a seamless whole that appears credible on its own terms as an alternative history.[7]

R'hllor, but the other religions have similarities as well. The Andals acted very much like crusaders by invading Westeros and forcing their religion on another race of people with an already established religion. The Old Man from the house of Black and White claims that the Andals worship seven faces of the same god, which is reminiscent of the holy trinity in Christianity. The Ironborn tradition of rebirth through drowning is like an intense version of a baptism. Vaes Dothrak is a lot like Jerusalem in that there is a convergence of religions, albeit a forced convergence due to Dothraki conquest.

If you're interested in more information and discussion about the series you should check out the ASOIAF subreddit, ASOIAFUniversity tumblr, and westeros.org.

I'll definitely be giving those a look. Are there a shitload of spoilers though? I'm almost done with book 3, Storm of Swords.

Any of the good sources (r/ASOIAF, etc) will have spoiler tags. The info will be categorized by book level and the like. They are very mindful of spoilers in most places

Okay then avoid Reddit. Most other sites have ample warning or drop-down options that hide threads/parts of threads based on how far along you are in the series.

I wouldn't risk it until you finish the series though... if you're anything like most readers, you'll be completely blown away by internet theories and imo it's much more fun to experience them in full after completing ADWD.

Best of luck continuing to have a life while in the middle of the series, I'm insanely jealous that you've still got two full books of new information ahead. I miss those days...

ETA: Reddit does have spoiler tags, but I find that people don't necessarily use them adequately.

R/asoiaf isn't going to spoil anything for you if you don't click on anything past Storm. It's a bannable offense on there to spoil

The new gods faith of the seven. At least it is comparable in a way to the Christian take on God if not the Jewish. I think the seven are supposed to be different aspects of one God in a similar way as the Trinity being different aspects of the one Christian God.

ETA: I guess I should have read the thread. This was already covered.

Yeah, i got into them late. I watched the series before really getting into the books but I enjoy the books tenfold. The TV series is great, but you can't get into the minds of the characters and that hamstrings the TV series a lot.
