Why do some kids commit silent? Why not just come out and make the choice public? Not a big recruiting guy so I apologize if this is a dumb question.

If they are from out of state, to minimize hatred from local fans for being "unloyal"

So that they can stand up proudly on NSD and state in front of god, family, friends and the cameras:

"Next ye-uh, I am going to take my talents to the University of LSU. Coach Mile is like family."

Some times the coaches don't want the commitment to be public. They (coaches) maynot want to scare off other recruits.

Deception, either to the school where you are silently committed or to the schools you still want to keep on the back burner.

Because kids want attention when they decide to announce it publicly.

There really is no point anymore. Even public commits have no meaning anymore. Its all a show and for us to talk about. Silents these days are reports drummed up by recruiting team sites to drum up clicks and traffic. University of Florida has had more silent commits in the past 10 years than any school in the country and they may be hitting on about a quarter of them. Their insiders have that market cornered and their fans fall for it hook line and sinker every year

So they can create the maximum amount of drama at the announcement ceremony.

Some want to wait for Signing Day, and do the hat on the table thing.

I think that sometimes coaches want to create a snowball effect by creating momentum. As the silent commitments start to announce, the coaches can call tell any truly undecided recruits to come be a part of something special.

Whether or not this truly affects the targeted recruits is debatable. The process seemed to be effective a couple time with USCw and Florida, both respective would ended with strong classes.

Yep, and want to make sure they reserve their spot on the roster.
