I got the new samsung smart uhd tv for Christmas. We have been looking to get rid of the ridiculous $200+ cable bill for a long time, but I did not want to switch until everything was figured out with the SECN deal. Especially now that I can watch all the LSU baseball games.

So do I even need a roku?

Also, if I did get rid of cable how could I ensure I can still watch tv in other rooms?

Same with Amazon Instant as well. You can Airplay just about anything on Apple TV that you can get with Roku except for Google Music, Movies, TV, etc.

Why force yourself to use AirPlay when there are devices that play it natively?

Also, having to use AirPlay negatively affects the Wife Acceptance Factor when using technology at my house.

Roku interfaces >>>> Smart TV interfaces

and much faster

I have a smart TV and have a Roku

as for watching TV in other rooms, you can bring the Roku with you to the other TVs, or buy 1 for each

you can buy refurbished Roku 2s for cheap to use on lesser used TVs, that is what I did

Roku + Plex + Letmewatchthis app = watch any movie/TV show you want

I didn't force myself to do anything. Most of the things I use anyways are already on Apple TV. I picked the product that is most compatible with my other devices and haven't had any problems

So basically I dont need one for the smart tv but would need one for the others. And I could use the same apps to watch what I want. You just prefer roku interface over smart tv.

Comparing two or more products before purchasing them is a something that everyone should do

There's nothing wrong with getting insight from other people.

If you just have inter webs then can you only catch espn3? I have Cox and since I do not have the second from highest package I could not pull up espnu for the candy game.

I purchased a slingbox 500 2 days ago. I am moving to Houston for 3 months and decided to keep paying my cable bill locally so I can watch the Pelicans & LSU while in Houston. I can basically watch my Direct TV from anywhere as long as I have wifi. Pretty awesome device. If it wasnt for local sports I would drop cable all together.

say a new show comes on at 8, i will get home at 8:15. Id rather be able to start playing it then and there rather wait for it to come on the app/letmewatchthis/G2G.fm a few hours/days later.

Who is arguing? I think Panic and I were just discussing the merits of the devices as they relate to Sling TV.

I own all the streaming devices and you are right. They are all fantastic! I love that my 4 year old can grab the remote and totally drive the Apple TV to whatever she wants to watch. It is that simple.
The Roku with Plex has served me well and is awesome in its own right.

However, since I have acquired the Amazon Fire TV and side loaded Kodi on it, I foresee a future for the Apple TV and Roku devices in my house - in a box in my closet.

Not having to wait 6 months to a year to watch new shows (legally). This isn't a problem with Fox shows but the other major networks haven't even put for much effort.

There are a few devices that allow this but they aren't cheap.

Then which device would you reccomend? I have a samsung smart tv so no need for a device there I guess. I need 1 or 2 for other tvs.

Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime subscriptions are obviously recommended. What other apps?

And how does the espn app work if you need a cable subscription?
