How is it irrational? Give me one good reason to want to move back

Cost of living is dirt cheap as well. Someone who's middle class up north or out west could immediately jump up to upper class and live like a fantastic quality of life here. Working class jumps to middle class and vice versa.

Not if you are a nurse. Nurses in the South are paid HORRIBLY compared to other parts of the country. It's no coincidence that most of the other travel nurses I encountered while travelnursing...were from Southern states. They got tired of the low pay.

It's not so much the place itself but rather I remember you talking about having bad experiences with some people growing up on this board and it's common for people to view the place negatively and not want to stay there.

It's irrational on its face but we're humans and humans are irrational. I don't fault you for that at all.

But they do benefit from the lower cost of living

Fishing is sooooooo boring though

Plus...where am I gonna hike at...Tunica Hills? Lame.

I mean...I get it if you love fishing and hunting..then yes...LA would be a paradise to you. Don't take it so personal when someone else doesn't share the same opinion as you.

People that say that fishing is boring were never taken by someone that got them catching fish

Not really. If there aren't any of the hobbies, activities, etc that improve your quality of life than a lower cost of living just isn't that much of a huge draw to want to move there.

And it's not like the cost of living where I live at is crazy insane like places in CA or NYC or places like that. I rent a 3 bedroom house for $1475 a month here. How much could you rent a 3 bedroom house for in Baton Rouge that was in a decent neighborhood that you could walk around in and not worry about getting robbed, shot, raped, etc? I remember renting a 3 bedroom house in BR back in 2004 for $1500 fwiw.

That hasn't been my observation. The brother that lives in the midwest was able to buy a big ol' house in town for under $200k where schools are very good and it's very safe, yet it is walkable, tons of civic pride and charm. Income taxes are higher but property taxes are lower. Groceries are around the same, if not cheaper. Most other goods are about the same.

He makes around $50/hr + good benefits as a welder. Like I said, he doesn't understand why I still live in the south. It's different for white collar folks were there isn't as much difference in compensation from region to region.

I was born in BR (visit frequently) raised in NW PA, lived in CT for one god awful year, living in Nashville now, moving to BR late-may early-June to be closer to family as the wife and I are beginning our own. There is no question in the north south debate. The South is clearly better, and most of my life I lived in the North. Glad to be back!

I live in NY and love the fishing here.

In addition to slaying steelhead, salmon, and brown trout I can hit most any warm water fish found in the lakes/streams of the south. The deer seem to be much bigger than anything I hunted in the south too.

The snow doesn't bother me - slows everything down. It's also nice to experience actual seasons rather than just go from boiling hot summers to wet and cool winters.

I don't know man, I like the idea of having seasons. Also, it might be nice to not have sauna-like conditions outside 6 months a year.

Go to realtor or Zillow. Check listings in Arlington and Alexandria under 430K. Not a lot of house for your money, which I guess is fine. But the locations don't really set my heart aflutter either. All that money for a 1900sqft connected townhouse (or 700sqft condo in Arlington) with little in the way of a yard and a snowball's chance of having even a single car garage?

I pay 2700 a month for 740sqft 1/1 in Crystal City, Arlington. I don't get the hype. The town isn't that fricking nice.

You aren't paying for the property - you're paying for great neighbors.

Average household income in my area is around $140k. Average. Basically everyone has a graduate degree. Practically no crime, the worst that happens here is having a bike stolen. The biggest political controversies here involve how much money to spend on a fricking streetcar line.

Yeah, actually it is, although Crystal City is IMHO overpriced even by local standards. I'm in Courthouse, which is more accessible to everywhere else and a 740 s.f. goes for about $400 less. I suggest moving.

Ill give you some hip boots and let you hike the marsh, much more challenging than walking on rocks all day

I love that about snow. It slows life to the pace it was meant to be. I wish we would get a good snow, just like 4-6 inches would be great

I've gone fishing as a girl. Grandparents had a pond on their property in St Francisville that we fished in all the time growing up. Also my parents would always rent cabins at Percy Quinn and go fishing. They love fishing...I just never liked it....and I've caught fish before. Bored me and I threw the fish back in the water and found something more fun to do.
