Maryann Flasch, a 32-year-old office manager from Austin, Colorado, used to suffer from vaginal itching, dryness and infections when she got her period, which she attributed to using tampons and pads. She had resigned herself to buying tube after tube of topical painkillers -- until she discovered the menstrual cup.

“I suffered for years with the side effects of using tampons/pads because I didn't know there was another option,” Flasch wrote in an email to The Huffington Post. "Not only do [menstrual cups] reduce garbage and mess, but they are a lifesaver for women that find tampons and pads to be highly irritating."

Sara Austin, a 25-year-old occupational therapist from Gainesville, Florida, also says that cups are easier to use than tampons and pads. She cited relief from vaginal dryness -- as well as a more pleasant olfactory experience.

Easier to use? That looks messy as hell. No thanks. I'm not some nasty hippie.

Can someone explain how its used? Is it like a drip cup with the opening facing the vagina to collect the discharge?

If so, does that mean women would be walking around with a cylinder full of menstrual blood all day hanging between their legs?

Somewhat misleading title. I expected to read about a bunch of women walking around with red stains on between their legs.

If they think it's an upgrade, I wouldn't call it giving up.

So it's washable? I'm sure that's a lovely sight at the public restroom sink.

don't know much about the plumbing details but the woman must know when it's about to flow, my wife had a toxic shock event due to tampons and gave them up, I never saw or knew of a drop of blood when I was doing the laundry, er, I mean when my French maid was doing the laundry
