ESPN doesn't want next season's college football semifinals to be played on New Year's Eve, so they're pushing to move it to Jan. 2. The playoff is not having any of it. This is a reporter for the Sports Business Journal...

ESPN urges @CFBPlayoff to move semifinals next season off New Year's Eve to Jan. 2, 2016, a Sat. w/ little TV competition. CFP holding firm.

It's not Espn, it's the Sugar Bowls fault mostly. They won't budge from New Years night.

The Rose Bowl won't either, but at least they have a valid excuse with the parade

I hate NYE, so I want them to keep it as is, but I totally understand everyone else despising the idea. ESPN should just flip the non-semi games to NYE and say frick the Rose and Sugar.

If this year was perfect, playing on the second makes more sense. NYE is a terrible idea.

I'm confused, this year the semi's were on New Years day. Next season is on new years eve? That makes zero sense. If it's true that the games are going to be played on 12/31 they should move them to 1/1.

I worded that poorly... This year was perfect because the games were on the actual holiday that we all had off. Even if it's on NYE, as opposed to Jan 1 like this year, we should all have it off. frick having it on Jan 2. Especially with that day being a Tuesday in 2016.

Rose and Sugar and guaranteed NY Day slots.

Something to do with rotating around the Sugar and Rose bowl's time slots. I don't get it.

The Rose and Sugar have extorted the system so they get NYD, even when they're not semis (this will all be thrown out of whack when Jan 1 is a Sunday for NFL, I think).

I'm guessing because the sugar and rose have new years day locked in and they don't want to play them simultaneously.

But a NYE night semifinal would have significantly worse ratings

Good. I'm not in the hate ESPN crowd, but it's time college football stops letting the tail wag the dog with scheduling and shite. Your product is worth what it's worth. Act like it.

Now this makes sense. I think the only logical thing is to move them to 1/2. Nye would be horrible for ratings (and most fans), 1/1 would just cannibalize ratings from rose and sugar and is an obvious no go. 1/2 is really the only logical answer since the rise and sugar can't be moved.

It's weird that in the 2017 playoff the Peach and Fiesta Bowls are the semifinals and they are played NYE while the Rose and Sugar are on Jan 2.

New Years Day must be on a Sunday otherwise I wouldn't know why they would do this.

I'm usually anti-ESPN but I like what they're trying to do here by getting the games on a Saturday that everyone will have off.

They could put pressure on the Sugar and Rose to agree to a switch, if not, limit their access to hosting the title game.
